Reasons: 1. Availability of HF and SPF and the shortage and price fluctuations of DF in lumber market; 2. Dimensional stability and architectural appearance of HF; 3. Sufficient design value for wood trusses; 4. Preferences of builders and framers. Building Designs: 1. No change on gravity load design. Roof trusses will be designed based on the loads and deflection criteria specified by building designer. 2. No change on shear wall design (UBC Table 234I -I). DF is still used in shear wall design. 3. Allowable shear of roof diaphragm (UBC Table 23 -II -H) reduced by factor of 0.82 due to specific gravity of HF refer to attached data table.. Roof Diaphragm: 15/32"thick, 24/0 panel with 8d 6" o.c. edges and boundaries, 12" o.c. field Doug Fir —Larch: Allowable shear: 240 plf Hem Fir: Allowable shear: 197 plf or 207 plf with 10d nails SPF (MSR 1.2 to 1.9 E): Allowable shear: 197 plf 4. Drag truss: Shear loads are transferred from truss to shear wall with Simpson A35 framing anchor or Strap tie. There are no changed in terms of the allowable loads between DF and HF (see Simpson load tables) Please call if you have any question Sincerely, John Cao, P.E. JMW Truss VP and Chief Engineer
