Reissued August 1, 1995 Filing Category: SWIMMING POOLS AND SPAS (266) HAWAIIAN FIBERGLASS POOLS HAWAIIAN FIBERGLASS POOLS, INC. 9800 YUCCA ROAD ADELANTO, CALIFORNIA 92301 I. Subject: Hawaiian Fiberglass Pools. II. Description: A. General: The swimming pools are of one-piece fiber- glass construction, shop. formed over a mold. The materials are mat and woven roving fiberglass, hand laid over a mold and bonded with polyester resins. The exposed surface is factory coated with an isophthalic gel a minimum of 30 mils in thickness. The completed pool has a minimum cured thickness of 3/16 inch. The cured fiberglass has an average tensile strength of 18,000 psi and a modulus of rupture of 36,000 psi. For sizes and capacities of pools, see Table 1. The pool..shell is structurally con- strained by a continuous concrete bond beam and is supported by a back- fill of minimum 6 -inch layer of compacted clean sand. The pool has a fiber- glass coping approximately 6 inches wide around all sides which is partially encased in poured -in-place concrete slab. For further details, re- fer to Figure 1. The narrow end of the pool is provided with curved steps and a seat. A main drain is built into the fiberglass pool at the deep end. A 2 -foot -square gravel sump is provided beneath the main drain base to collect any groundwater or drainage from the sand bed on which the pool is installed. A 11/2 -inch -diameter PVC pipe is connected from the sump to equipment pad and is capped. All plumbing and electrical work must comply with the codes in effect at the construction site. The pool design requires it to remain full of water at all times. A permanent sign is to be attached to the pumping equipment and is to read as follows: Notice: Pool is designed to remain full of water at all times. The pool shell may be damaged if water level is allowed to drop below the pool inlet. When appreciable drawdown is noticed or if it becomes necessary to drain the pool, contact Hawaiian Fiberglass Pools, Inc., or its agents for instructions. A pressure -sensitive label is installed adjacent to the above sign by the manufacturing licensee displaying his name, address and telephone number. B. Installation: The pools may be installed without a soil investigation by a qualified engineer, provided none of the following conditions is en- countered at the site and subject to approval by the building official: 1. The existence of groundwater within the depth of the pool excavation. 2. The existence of an uncompacted fill in contact with any portion of the pool. 3. The existence of any expansive or adobe -type soils at or within the confines of the pool area. 4. The existence of any soil types whose angle of repose will not support the walls of excavation at the desired slopes. 5. The location of the proposed pool excavation is such as to have a ten- dency to endanger adjacent structures. If any of the above conditions is encountered, the excavation for the pool shall cease immediately until the specific conditions at the site have been reviewed and recommendations have been made by a qualified engi- neer. The engineer's report of this review and recommendation is to be submitted to the building official having jurisdiction over the construction site, and his approval must be obtained prior to the continuance of the work. The excavation of the pool consists of removing the existing soil from the proposed area with an overexcavation of a minimum 6 inches on all sides. The required drains and plumbing work are installed and a contoured layer of clean sand is placed at the lower areas of the pool up to a point at which "sloughing" would occur. The pool is then placed on this sand bed and carefully aligned and leveled to preclude any buckling or irregula- rities in the fiberglass. Water is then introduced into the pool up to a level approximately equal to the sand level. Backfilling with sand is carefully continued upward, maintaining an approximately uniform height around the four sides of the pool at all times. The pool is simultaneously filled with water as the backfilling progresses, maintaining approximately equal lev- els of water in the pool and the backfill sand layer. The backfill sand is con- solidated by flooding with water as the work progresses. The sand backfill is stopped 6 inches below the bottom of the coping on all sides of the pool. The outside lip of the fiberglass pool coping is embedded in a concrete walkway (bond beam) installed around the entire pool. See Figure 1 for details. The concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 2,000 psi at 28 days. The pools are to be installed only by factory -trained and approved agents or franchised installers in accordance with the requirements of this report. C. Identification: Fiberglass one-piece swimming pools are identified by recessed lettering displaying the company name, serial number and date of manufacture. III. Evidence Submitted: An engineering report, pool plans, test data for the fiberglass material and a quality control manual have been submitted. Findings IV. Findings: That the Hawaiian Fiberglass Pools are alternate meth- ods of construction for swimming pools to these specified in the 1994 Uniform Building Codirm, subject to the following conditions: 1. The construction and pool installation comply with this report and the manufacturer's Instructions. 2. Electrical and plumbing installation comply with the respective . codes in effect at the construction site. 3. The pools are installed by a factory -trained and licensed install- er or an agent approved by Hawaiian Fiberglass Pools, Inc. This report is subject to re-examination in two years.
