The design involves the withdrawal desig-n,for lag screws for wind. All other component installation and. design are per manufacturer recommendations Subject: Structural, Evaluation of Existing Roof and Supporting Members for Additional Loading from PV - - Installation for the detached single unit'building Existing Structural Description: The Structu=ral information for the building was obtained by site investigation performed by Contractor. The roof is made of 2z4 Truss at 24" o.c, with at least a min %2 a plywood topped by Tiles. The lateral force resistance for the, building is achieved by light framed stud walls in both perpendicular directions. The YV" thick plywood acts as a diaphragm and distributes lateral, forces. Proposed PV Layout and System: Contractor proposes to install Solar Panels per the PV plans to produce the intended power output. A Typical.PV System consists of Solar Panels installed on an Aluminum Racking system made of Rails. and Connection angles. And•the resulting lattice system is connected to the existing..roof joists via,lag screws. The panels and the racking system are rated for 130 Mph (Strength) wind velocity per manufacturer's specifications.' Please see the Appendices for Layout and Connection method. Structural Calculations: Structural Assessment and Conclusion: Gravity Loading: The proposed PV system does increase the gravity weight on the structure, however, it does not increase more than 5% of the total dead load as stipulated:by Chapter 34 of CBC -13. Please see the attached spreadsheet report under LOAD CRITERIA AND'LOAD INCREASE CALCULATIONS for detailed p calculations. a: , Hence, no retrofit of the roof, is required. As a conclusion; the roof can handle the additional weight from the PV Panels. ' f # • .. . ^ " t Wind Loading: The proposed PV -'system has a very low profile and does not create any secondary eddies on'the roof level, and hence the Roof profile. has no dynamic impact;on the wind flow over the building.. The Installation of the PV system doesnotincrease.the wind loading on building. The panels and the " racking system are rated for 130 Mph (Strength) wind velocity per, manufacturer's specifications. As per the calculations, the uplift forces are well within'the allowable connection capacity.. .F a Phone 949.295.7943 1',19,31 . Z y a Seismic Loading: The proposed PV system does increase the weight on the structure, however, it does not increase more than 10% of the seismic mass as stipulated by Chapter 34 of CBC -13. Therefore, no seismic retrofit of the structure is required. All the connections of the PV system to the existing roof members are designed to carry seismic forces generated during a seismic event. Installation of PV Racking:' Typical PV panels are arranged in a portrait or landscape format. The entire, array is supported by an aluminum racking system. The aluminum racking system consists of two _ continuous rails running parallel to the length of the panel in a portrait array format. Each of the rails are connected to two predrilled holes at the bottom of the panel frame as specified by the manufacturer. The rails are connected to the mounting angles/Fast Jack providing setoff distance to the roof. The angles/Fast Jack are connected to the roof joist/trusses.with °lag screws. Typically, a minimum of two bolts are common to each panel. The roof mounts with lag screws are arranged in an _ - approximate grid format of 6'-0" maximum spacing. The rails are specific to each job and selected from the manufacturer catalog which are rated for, applications at different wind velocities. Please refer to the lag screw design calculations Serviceability Issues: The -resulting deflection of the. joist due to the added loads is negligible. Please note that this report doesn't warranty any existing deficiencies in structure or contractor's workmanship or work performed by;other subs. This report and. calculations have been performed based on information provided by the contractor. To minimize overheating of the busbar in panelboard, the panelboard main circuit breaker and the PV power source circuit breaker shall be physically located at the opposite end of the busbar. 20. All the NEC required warning signs, markings, and labels shall be posted on equipment and disconnects prior to any inspections to be performed by the Building Department inspector. 21. Metallic raceways or metallic enclosures are required wiring method for inside a building for PV system. [NEC 690.31(E)] 22. Flexible, fine -stranded cables shall be terminated only with terminals, lugs, devices or connector that are identified and listed for such use. [NEC 690.31(F)] 23. Connectors shall be of latching or locking type. Connectors that are readily accessible and operating at over 30 volts shall 24. Require tool to open and marked "Do Not Disconnect Under Load" or "Not For Current Interrupting". [NEC 690.33(C) & (E)(2)] 25. Equipment grounding conductor for PV modules smaller than 6AWG shall be protected from physical damage by a raceway or cable armor. [NEC 690.46 & 250.120(C)] 26. Equipment grounding conductor for PV systems without Ground Fault Protection (GFP) and installed on non -dwelling unit must have ampacity of at least 2 times the temperature and conduit fill corrected circuit conductor ampacity. [NEC 690.45(B)] 27. Fine stranded cables used for battery terminals, devices, and connections require lugs and terminals listed and marked for the use. [NEC 690.74] 28. Grounding bushings are required around pre -punched concentric knockouts on the DC side of the system (NEC 250.64 C) 29. Grounding electrode conductor will be continuous, expect for splices or joints at busbars within listed equipment. (NEC 250.64 C) 30. All smoke alarms, Carbon monoxide alarms and audible notification devices shall be listed and labeled in accordance with UL 217 and UL 2034. They will be installed in accordance with NFPA 72 and NFPA 720. (CRC 2013 R314 & R315). 31. 2013 California Residential Code (CRC) requires that Smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms be retrofitted into the existing dwelling. These Smoke alarms are required to be in all bedrooms, outside each bedroom, and at least one on each floor of the house. Carbon Monoxide alarms are required to be retrofitted outside each bedroom and at least one on each floor of the house. These alarms may be solely battery operated if the Photovoltaic project does not involve the removal of interior wall and ceiling finishes inside the home, otherwise, the alarms must be hard wired and interconnected.
