Reissued August 1, 1999 Filing Category: SWIMMING POOLS AND SPAS (266) HAWAIIAN FIBERGLASS POOLS HAWAIIAN FIBERGLASS POOLS, INC. 17031 MUSKRAT AVENUE ADELANTO, CALIFORNIA 92301 1.0 SUBJECT Hawaiian Fiberglass Pools. 2.0 DESCRIPTION 2.1 General: The swimming pools are of one-piece fiberglass construction, shop formed over a mold. The materials are mat and woven roving fiberglass, hand laid over a mold and bonded with vinyl ester as well as polyester resins. The exposed surface is fac- tory coated with an isophthalic gel a minimum of 30 mils in thickness. The completed pool has a minimum cured thick- ness of 1/4 inch. The cured fiberglass has an average tensile strength of 18,000 psi and a modulus of rupture of 36,000 psi. For sizes and capacities of pools, see Table 1. The pool shell is structurally constrained by a continuous concrete bond beam and is supported by a backfill of minimum 6 -inch layer of compacted clean sand. The pool has a fiberglass coping approximately 6 inches wide around all sides which is partially encased in poured -in-place concrete slab. For further details, refer to Figure 1. The narrow end of the pool is. provided with curved steps and a seat. A main drain is built into the fiber- glass pool at the deep end. A 2 -foot -square gravel sump is provided beneath the main drain base to collect any ground- water or drainage from the sand bed on which the pool is in- stalled. A 11/2 -inch -diameter PVC pipe is connected from the sump to equipment pad and is capped. All plumbing and electrical work must comply with the codes in effect at the construction site. The pool design re- quires it to remain full of water at all times. A permanent sign is to be attached to the pumping equipment and is to read as follows: Notice: Pool is designed to remain full of water at all times. The pool shell may be damaged if water lev- el is allowed to drop below the pool inlet. When appre- ciable drawdown is noticed or if it becomes necessary to drain the pool, contact Hawaiian Fiberglass Pools, Inc., or its agents for instructions. u A pressure -sensitive label is installed adjacent to the above sign by the manufacturing licensee displaying his name, ad- dress and telephone number. 2.2 Installation: The pools may be installed without a soil investigation by a qualified engineer, provided none of the following conditions is encountered at the site and subject to approval by the build- ing official: 1. The existence of groundwater within the depth of the pool excavation. 2. The existence of an uncompacted fill in contact with any portion of the pool. 3. The existence of any expansive or adobe -type soils at of within the confines of the pool area. 4. The existence of any soil types whose angle of repose will not support the walls of excavation at the desired slopes. 5. The location of the proposed pool excavation is such as to have a tendency to endanger adjacent structures. If any of the above conditions is encountered, the excava- tion for the pmol shall cease immediately until the specific con- ditions at the site have been reviewed and recommendations have been made by a qualified engineer. The engineer's re- port of this review and recommendation is to be submitted to the building official having jurisdiction over the construction site, and his approval must be obtained prior to the continu- ance of the work. The excavation of the pool consists of re- moving the existing soil from the proposed area with an over - excavation of a minimum 6 inches on all sides. The required drains and plumbing work are installed and a contoured layer of clean sand is placed at the lower areas of the pool up to a point at which "sloughing” would occur. The pool is then placed on this sand bed and carefully aligned and leveled to preclude any buckling or irregularities in the fiber- glass. Water is then introduced into the pool up to a level ap- proximately equal to the sand level. Backfilling with sand is carefully continued upward, maintaining an approximately uniform height around the four sides of the pool at all times. The pool is simultaneously filled with water as the backfilling progresses, maintaining approximately equal levels of water in the pool and the backfill sand layer. The backfill sand is con- solidated by flooding with water as the work progresses. The sand backfill is stopped 6 inches below the bottom of the cop- ing on all sides of the pool. The outside lip of the fiberglass pool coping is embedded in a concrete walkway (bond beam) installed around the entire pool. See Figure 1 for details. The concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 2,000 psi at 28 days. The pools are to be installed only by factory -trained and ap- proved agents or franchised installers in accordance with the requirements of this report. 2.3 Identification: Fiberglass one-piece swimming pools are identified by re- cessed lettering displaying the company name, serial number and date of manufacture. 3.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED An engineering report, pool plans, test data for the fiberglass material and a quality control manual have been submitted.
