It is my professional opinion that the additional thirty some square of roof
added will have very little lateral effect on the existing structure and that the
existing design is capable of distributing the additional shear to the original shear
walls. I have attached an analysis for the design of the gravity load members.
If you have any additional concerns, please feel free to contact my office at
your convenience.

Dear Mark:
La Quinta, CaliforniaC
92,
I have been retained by Mr. Terry Smith of Integrity Construction to design
the necessary structural elements for the small room addition to the residence in
(619),564-0884
PGA West - 54-785 Inverness. I visited the city this morning and reviewed the
-the "Legends
.
original structural plans for Mediterranean" . (M) style 20, 30, and
30A as designed by Nick Gouvis.
The existing structure extends at the eaves approximately two to three feet
past the face of the bearing walls. Inasmuch as the total extension to this plan will
not exceed eight feet, the lateral loads induced by this extension would transfer very
little additional shear to the existing noted shear walls. Although the addition is
listed as 168 square feet, there is currently 123 square feet of existing roof over the
patio area that is to be enclosed by this addition. The addition of the new exterior
walls will replace the existing exterior walls and therefore do not add sufficient
lateral load as well.
The weakest direction would be parallel to the home. The south most wall
(relative to the Gallogly plan) is solid and without openings. The weak corners are
to be dragged into the existing framing in order to assure that the structure is tied
together. I have instructed Mr. Smith to indicate appropriate straps and details on
the plans.
