The carefully designed Principal Engineer installation focused on strong ties to the rocky desert hills that surround the 78-495 Calle Tampico, city and the planting is now appropriate for the desert environment. The city leaders wanted a bold statement to initialize a city-wide branding of the public right-of-way. Cut steel panels, big timber rails, detailed crosswalks and sidewalks, and a foothill landscape design give great character to the main thoroughfare and hearken back to the ranchland history of Diamond Bar. Street work on busy avenues is always a challenge to design and implement. Numerous workshops with City Council, city staff and the design team resulted in a highly detailed iconic design which improves safety, function and streetscape aesthetics. The landscape's water -wise plants and new street trees, unique and intricate brick paving, artistic cut steel panels and decorative post -and -rail fencing unify the major thoroughfares in the City. Planting areas attractively separate sidewalk and street, allowing for safer travel for pedestrians and drivers carrying out tasks and errands of daily life. New city signs were designed and installed with lighting for night viewing allowing the beauty of these signs to be appreciated day and night. Custom street lights and new colored concrete crosswalks with cut stone diamond inlays accent the intersections. Installation of the design features required careful planning, phased weekend partial street closures and coordinated utility relocations. Diamond Bar's streetscape improvements evoke memories of the city's rustic past and creatively set it apart from other cities in eastern Los Angeles County. -Y - 1_ _J _^ 1 7N111111111111111111) ........................................................................... _ .................. The landscaping improvements alongside the Harbor Boulevard Bike Trail provide a safety buffer between the trail and the busy street, and create pleasant conditions for bike riders or pedestrians. It was important that the new trail improvements continue the precedent of other sustainable, attractive quality of life improvements in the city. The Trail reflects an aesthetic in sync with other new streetscapes, supporting a unifying theme of well -conceived public works projects that reflect the vibrancy of Costa Mesa. The bike trail connects to the Joann Street Bike Trail to the 208 -Fairview Park Trail, connecting riders to the Santa Ana River Trail for a 3 -mile ride to the Ocean. The old asphalt bike trail was dilapidated and unsafe, constructed with long swaths of turf grass on either side. It was not much to look at, nor was it indicative of the vibrant streetscape of the new Harbor Boulevard improvements. The turf grass was removed and replaced with attractive planting and sustainable materials that required less water and maintenance. The bike trail itself was completely raised and rebuilt. This 12 foot wide colored concrete trail construction and beautification project achieved more than what was initially planned for. Complete with lighting for night use and an abundance of trees for shade, bike trail edge plantings display beautiful layering of boulders and cobblestones, trees and brightly colored water - wise plantings. Collaborations and agreements with neighboring homeowners associations resulted in cooperative arrangements that allowed the project to proceed smoothly. Irrigation for the project was designed to conserve resources by delivering water to individual plants amid ribbons of boulders, decorative cobblestones, and decomposed granite fines. The landscape improvements along this meandering pathway make a bike ride or stroll an inviting experience. ..................................... .............'......"-"'.............................. .......... ............................... .............. . These parcels connect dozens of mid -city neighborhoods, as well as several local schools and commercial districts, they also allow for easy access to large city parks. Access to nature and open green space is provided throughout this 2 1/2 acre park through elements including rolling turf grass, interspersed garden spaces as well as California native plantings that encompass one fifth of the site. The half -mile long park trail system meanders through the green space and provides access to numerous play and recreation nodes. This pathway -to -play parallels a new class 1 off street bikeway that runs the length of the project and connects to other city-wide trails. There are exciting play spaces, exercise equipment pods, sports courts and picnic spaces dispursed along the liner park's trail system. Play spaces that engage visitors in both self-directed as well as programed play opportunities. After any given school day, the park site is filled with kids traveling between school and home who stop to recreate along this parks' pathway. On weekends the picnic spaces are full with families and community celebrations of all kinds. There are sculptures in this park that tie together the art and nature theme that the community asked for during the park planning process. An example is the metal sculptures near the picnic shelter which are artistic interpretations of native California plants. State Street Park enriches the community, invites and provides access and elements of programed, prescribed and creative play, and provides wonderful park space on "found" underutilized utility corridor lands. ...................................................,..
