Hi Teresa,
It was a pleasure talking with you earlier this afternoon. Please add the attached remarks to the reading of
comments for the new La Quinta Fine Art Festival proposals and recommendations. I have also attached 1 of
the images that I have used for this years festival to give an example of the quality of my work.
Thank you again for the help.

CITY COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING ART EVENT COMMUNITY WORKSHOP – JULY 10, 2019;
WRITTEN COMMENT BY JONATHON STOPPER ON STUDY SESSION ITEM NO. 1 - FUTURE ART EVENTS IN LA QUINTA
An open letter to the City Council of La Quinta,
By now many of us in the Art community are now fully aware of the LAQF's decision to
completely cancel the La Quinta Art Festival. I had the privilege of being an exhibitor for
the past 8 years and have grown to thoroughly enjoy my trip every March. It has come
my attention that the city is currently discussing the possibility of having Vermillion
Productions come in and replace the old show with a new one . I personally love the
idea of continuing the experience and really hope that it works. If the city is considering
the same dates and location for the event , that would be fantastic. I have worked with
Candy Vermillion in the past and feel this would be a great move for both parties. She is
a good person to work with and could easily replace the LAQF.
If the city is going in this direction several things come to mind. The obvious is the
continuation of the revenue that the festival generates locally, but also Candy is
someone who will work with you not set her own agenda and exhibit little Flexibility. In
Bringing a new promoter, several issues really need to be done including a due diligence
investigation of whether the promoter can actually deliver as promised. The last thing
the city and the artists need is someone or organization who cannot deliver as
promised. 1 promoter comes to mind and that is Howard Alan Events. Bringing in
someone like them is a sure fire way to kill the show completely. It is extremely
important that the patron base for the festival does not notice any reduction in the
quality or familiarity of the artists exhibiting. Any changes it that aspect will doom the
event before it has a chance to reestablish itself as the new and improved version of The
La Quinta Fine Arts Festival.
Secondly, if this is the direction the city intends, success will be a much greater
probability if you can maintain both the dates and location. I have done fine art festivals
for over 40 years and date changes and location changes can really affect a shows
attendance and in many cases be the final nail in the coffin so to speak. Once the
patrons realize that there is no real change in both the quality and timing of the festival,
moving it to the new location will be much smoother and effective.
A final note. I have already talked to a number of artists who are either current La
Quinta exhibitors, previous exhibitors and those who were chased away fro m the
festival because of the 20% and the treatment of the artists prior to Kathleen Hughes
taking over the show management. The festival would not loose any of its standing or
quality if you proceed and the list of quality artists will be significantly higher once the
artist community becomes aware of the positive changes that will take place.
I seriously hope that the City Council will move forward on this and look forward to
many more wonderful years coming to La Quinta.
