This engineering judgment was developed to demonstrate that the proposed protection details meet the level of safety intended by the CBC. FIRE PROTECTION OF W-COLUMNS 1.1 Code requirement Per requirements of CBC Table 601 the primary structural frame and the roof construction of the building shall have a fire -resistance rating (FRR) of not less than 1 hour. Due to the particular circumstances of this project, Section 722 of CBC has been considered as the basis for this engineering judgment in order to provide an appropriate level of fire protection. Per CBC Section 703.3(3), the required fire resistance of a building element, component or assembly shall be permitted to be established by calculations in accordance with CBC Section 722. 1.2 Proposed System Following is a detailed description of the proposed fire protection of the W-columns. See also Figure 1 and Figure 2. It should be noted that the protection details of W16x100 -columns differ slightly (e.g. the timber studs might be different). However, this engineering judgement considers the worst case and can be applied to all variations presented in architectural sheet A190.1, revision 7. 1.2.1 Steel Column The profile of all the considered steel W-columns is W16x100. 1.2.2 Gypsum Boards The columns shall be protected with one layer of 5/8" thick type X gypsum wallboard from the exposed sides. The corners of the gypsum boards shall be attached by using galvanized 0.0149-inch minimum thickness steel corner beads with 11/2 -inch legs attached to the gypsum board with 1-inch-long Type S screws spaced 12 inches on center in accordance with the applicable details of CBC Figure 722.5.1(3). Type S screws, 1 3/4 inch long, shall be used for attaching the gypsum board to timber studs. Note that the length of the screws is increased compared to CBC Figure 722.5.1(3) to account for the charring of the wood. 1.2.3 Timber Studs Timber studs with minimum width of 11/2" shall be used inside the encasement. 1.2.4 Insulation In alternative 2 (Figure 2), there shall be insulation material on the other side of the column web. 1.3 Evaluation The following is a detailed evaluation and engineering assessment of the proposed protection for W16x100 columns. La Ouinta Resort - Engineering Judgement, Fire Protection of Steel Members _ 135192.00_La Quints Resort EJ - Steel Protection.docx 4 1.3.1 Steel Column The profile of all the considered steel W-columns is W16x100. Thus, the specific values for this cross-section will be applied in the calculation. 1.3.2 Gypsum Boards The FRR of the W16x100 -column is determined from the following expression (CBC 722.6.1.2, Equation 7-12). 130rh N( "ID)u.7] LL 2 Where: R = Fire resistance (minutes). h = Total thickness of gypsum wallboard (inches). D = Heated perimeter of the structural steel column W' = Total weight of the structural steel column and gypsum wallboard protection (pounds per linear foot). W' = W + 50hD/144 The following values were applied in the calculation of the fire resistance (R): h=5/8 D = 16.97 + 2 x 10.425 = 37.82 (see Figure 6. The side against the external wall is not taken into account in the heated perimeter as the exterior side is not expected to be exposed by a fire inside the building). It should be noted that in the condition in alternative 2 (Figure 2) the heated perimeter is shorter (two sides of the profile are against the external wall). Thus, the results calculated here are on the safe side compared to alternative 2. W = 100 (Manual of Steel Construction, Allowable Stress Design, RISC) W'=100+50x5/8x37.82/144=108.21 Figure 5- Ma):tYiUnl heated perimeter or the V!-ccLumn La Quinta Resort - Engineering Judgement, Fire Protection of Steel Members 135192.00_La Quinta Resort EJ - Steel Protection.doex 5 Using the abovementioned values, the FRR of the column per CBC Equation 7-12 is: R = 130 (5/8 x ((108.21 / 37.82)0.75) / 2) = 89 min a 60 min 1.3.3 Timber Studs According to CBC Table 722.6.2(1) time assigned to 5/8" wallboard membrane is 40 minutes, which is 2/3 the required fire -resistance period. Per American Wood Council (AWC) National Design Specification (NDS) 2018 unprotected timber chars 1.5 inch / hr. The minimum width of the timber studs is 1.5". Based on the dimensions of the studs, charring rate and gypsum wallboard protection, it can be assumed that large portion of the timber studs will remain uncharred during the 1-hr fire exposure and therefore provide support for the gypsum boards and protect thermally the steel portions that they are attached. Therefore it, is concluded that the timber studs in this case provide equivalent performance in fire as the steel studs prescribed in CBC Figure 722.5.1(3). 1.3.4 Insulation The effect of the insulation on the other side of the column web is not taken into account in the FRR calculations. However, the insulation is considered to have a positive effect on FRR, since it delays the heating of the column. 1.4 Conclusion After careful review of the design conditions, it is our professional judgement that the proposed fire protection of W-columns for La Quinta Resort & Club meeting rooms (sheet A190.1, revision 7 provided on October 29, 2019) meets the requirements of 2016 CBC and provides an equivalent 1-hour fire -resistance rating. 2 FIRE PROTECTION OF HSS-COLUMNS 2.1 Code requirement Per requirements of CBC Table 601 the primary structural frame and the roof construction of the building shall have a fire -resistance rating of not less than 1 hour. Due to the particular circumstances of this project, UL-listed Design No. X528 (see attached) and Section 722 of CBC have been considered as the basis for this engineering judgment in order to provide an appropriate level of fire protection. Per CBC Section 703.3(3), the required fire resistance of a building element, component or assembly shall be permitted to be established by calculations in accordance with CBC Section 722. 2.2 Proposed System Following is detailed description of the proposed fire protection of the HSS-columns. See also Figure 3. La Quinta Resort - Engineering Judgement, Fire Protection of Steel Members 135192.00_La Quinta Resort EJ - Steel Protection.docx 6 2.2.1 Steel Column The profile of all the considered steel HSS-columns is HSS 5x5x0.25. 2.2.2 Gypsum Boards The columns shall be protected with two layers of 5/8" thick type X gypsum wallboard from the exposed sides. The corners of the gypsum boards shall be attached by using galvanized 0.0149-inch minimum thickness steel corner beads with 11/2 -inch legs attached to the gypsum board with 1" -long Type S screws spaced 12 inches on center in accordance with the applicable details of CBC Figure 722.5.1(3) or No. 28 MSG galv steel, 1-1/4 in. legs with No. 6 by 1 in. screws spaced 12 in. OC max as specified in UL-listed Design No. X528. Type S screws,1 inch long, shall be used for attaching the first layer of gypsum board to the timber studs at 24 inches on center. Type S screws 1 3/4-inch long shall be used for attaching the second layer of gypsum board to timber studs at 12 inches on center in accordance with the applicable details of CBC Figure 722.5.1(3). 2.2.3 Timber Studs Timber studs with minimum width of 1.5" shall be used inside the encasement. 2.3 Evaluation The following is a detailed evaluation and engineering assessment of the proposed protection for HSS 5x5x0.25 columns. 2.3.1 Column Profile The profile of all the considered steel HSS-columns is HSS 5x5x0.25. Thus, the specific values for this cross- section will be applied in the calculation. 2.3.2 Gypsum Boards The FRR of the HSS 5x5x0.25 -column is determined from the following expression (CBC 722.5.1.2, Equation 7- 12). 130["7 ► !) 0.7' , Where: R = Fire resistance (minutes). h = Total thickness of gypsum wallboard (inches). D = Heated perimeter of the structural steel column W' = Total weight of the structural steel column and gypsum wallboard protection (pounds per linear foot). W'=W+50hD/144 La Quinta Resort - Engineering Judgement, Fire Protection of Steel Members 135192.00_La Quinta Resort EJ - Steel Protection.docx 7 The following values were applied in the calculation of the fire resistance (R): h=2x5/8=1'/a D = 3 x 5 = 15 (see Figure 7. The side against the external wall is not taken into account in the heated perimeter as the exterior side is not expected to be exposed by a fire inside the building). It should be noted that the calculated values are on the safe side compared to condition where the HSS-column is located in the corner of the exterior walls because in this case two sides of the column are not expected to be exposed by a fire inside the building. W = 15.62 (Manual of Steel Construction, Allowable Stress Design, AISC) W'=15.62+50x11/4x15/144=22.13 Figure 7- Heated perimeter of the HSS-column Using the abovementioned values, the FRR of the column per CBC Equation 7-12 is: R = 130 (1 '/a x ((22.13 / 15)0-76) / 2) =108 min n 60 min 2.3.3 Timber Studs According to CBC Table 722.6.2(1) time assigned to 5/8" Type X gypsum wallboard membrane is 40 minutes. Two 5/8" Type X gypsum wallboards are considered to protect the timber studs from charring at least the required 1-hr period. Based on the protection of the gypsum wallboards, it can be assumed that the timber studs will remain uncharred during the 1-hr fire exposure and therefore provide support for the gypsum boards and protect thermally the steel portions that they are attached. Therefore it, is concluded that the timber studs in this case provide equivalent performance in fire as the steel studs prescribed in CBC Figure 722.5.1(3) or as specified in UL-listed Design No. X528. 2.4 Conclusion After careful review of the design conditions, it is our professional judgement that the proposed fire protection of HSS-columns for La Quinta Resort & Club meeting rooms (sheets A190.1, revision 7 and A191.1, revision 7 La Quinta Resort - Engineering Judgement, Fire Protection of Steel Members 135192.00_La Quinta Resort EJ - Steel Protection.docx provided on October 29, 2019) meets the requirements of 2016 CBC and provides an equivalent 1-hour fire - resistance rating. 3 FIRE PROTECTION OF W-BEAMS 3.1 Code requirement Per requirements of CBC Table 601 the primary structural frame and the roof construction of the building shall have a fire -resistance rating of not less than 1 hour. In accordance with CBC Section 704.3, individual encasement for the primary and secondary beams of the roof is not required. Therefore, a fire -resistance -rated ceiling membrane protection is acceptable. Due to the particular circumstances of this project, UL Design X772 (see attached) and the recommendations of the coating manufacturer have been considered as the basis for this engineering judgment in order to provide an appropriate level of fire protection. 3.2 Proposed System Following is detailed description of the proposed fire protection of the W-beams. See also Figure 4 and Figure 5. 3.2.1 Steel Beam The profile of all the considered steel W-beams is W 16x36. 3.2.2 Spray -Applied Fire Resistive Material The exposed part of the beam in alternative 1 (Figure 4) shall be protected with at least 1" thick layer of spray - applied fire resistive material. Light gauge break metal plates shall be applied to the gypsum ceiling and wall as shown in Figure 4 to ensure the appropriate adhesion of the spray -applied fire resistive material. 3.2.3 Membrane Protection The upper part of the beam is protected by the existing drywall ceiling (1/2" gypsum board) with at least 35 mils dry / 53 mils wet coating of Firefree 88 -intumescent fire resistant coating. In alternative 2 (Figure 5), the abovementioned protection is applied also for the lower part of the beam. A 2" wide timber profile is installed behind the gypsum board. 3.2.4 Protection of the Lower Flange The lower flange of the beams is protected by mineral fiber compressible fill and two 1.5" wide timber profiles. The timber profiles are inside a wall and protected either by gypsum board or spray applied fireproofing. The gap between mineral fiber and light gauge break metal plate / gypsum board shall be filled with fire sealant. Lo Quinta Resort - Engineering Judgement, Fire Protection of Steel Members 135192.00_La Quinta Resort EJ - Steel Protection.docx 9 3.3 Evaluation The following is a detailed evaluation and engineering assessment of the proposed protection of W-beams. 3.3.1 Steel Beam The profile of all the considered steel W-beams is W 16x36. 3.3.2 Spray -Applied Fire Resistive Material UL Design X772 requires 13/16" thick layer of spray -applied fire resistive material to profile W16x36 to achieve 1- hr fire -resistance -rating. The proposed thickness is larger than this value. The light gauge break metal plates are considered to ensure the adhesion of the protection material at the gypsum ceiling and wall. 3.3.3 Membrane Protection The manufacturer of the Firefree 88 -intumescent fire resistant coating recommends 35 mils dry / 53 mils wet coating to be applied with 1/2" gypsum board in order to achieve 1-hr FRR (email from manufacturer's representative attached). Therefore, this membrane protection is considered acceptable. Based on the 1-hr protection, it can be assumed that the timber profiles will remain uncharred during the 1-hr fire exposure and therefore provide support for the gypsum boards. In alternative 1, the spray -applied fire resistive material should be applied first, with small overlap of the intumescent fire resistant coating. 3.3.4 Protection of the Lower Flange Per American Wood Council (AWC) National Design Specification (NDS) 2018 unprotected timber chars 1.5 inch / hr. The overall width of the timber profiles is clearly more (3"). Moreover, the timber profiles are protected either by gypsum board or spray applied fireproofing. Based on the dimensions of the timber profiles, charring rate and the protection provided by gypsum board / spray applied material, it can be assumed that the timber members protect the lower flange of the beam for the required 1-hr period equally or better than specified in UL-listed Design X772. 3.4 Conclusion After careful review of the design conditions, it is our professional judgment that the proposed fire protection of W-beams of La Quinta Resort G Club meeting rooms (sheets A190.1, revision 7 and A191.1, revision 7 provided on October 29, 2019) meets the requirements of 2016 CBC and provides an equivalent 1-hour fire -resistance rating. We have tested a similar assembly in regards to the gypsum layered ceiling area (WHI-495-PSH02450246), in addition to extensive testing on numerous gypsum board wall and ceiling assemblies to the ASTM E 119 1 & 2 hour fire testing standards as well as individual component testing on different thicknesses of gypsum board to the ASTM E 119 and other ASTM standards. In Regards to the wood "I" joist portion of your assembly, we have conducted extensive testing on both wood assemblies and individual wood components, including solid timbers, Plywood, OSB and OSB "I" joists to a wide variety of fire testing standards including the ASTM E-119 1 & 2 hour testing standards, ASTM E-108, ASTM E-1623, ASTM E- 84. All of our fire tests are conducted at third - party accredited IAS ICC-ES fire laboratories. Based on our extensive testing on multiple material substrates, we have been able to provide a conservative performance rating of 1.04 minutes of fire performance per each dry mil applied. The FF88 coating has been tested to ceiling assemblies to the ASTM E 119 test standard on both loaded and unloaded, full scale and small scale, defectively built wall and ceiling assemblies, with undersized and over spaced fasteners as would occur in real world situations. This level of testing was performed in order to correct or increase fire ratings on these defectively built assemblies. As part of both analysis, we are referencing the Warnock -Hersey test report, WHI- 495-PSH-02450246 using 9 1/2" I joists at 19.2"o.c. with RC Channel, mineral wool insulation in one portion of the tested assembly and no insulation in the second part of the assembly with one layer of 5/8" Type "X" gypsum board as the finished ceiling. We have selected this defectively built and tested assembly for our analysis purposes for the reasons as follows: W The "I" joists with a 3/8" OSB web will fail at a faster rate than what would occur in a wood framed floor/ceiling system. "I" joist failure occurs at just over 7 minutes versus 2" x wood framing material that has a .6mm per minute char rate that can withstand a higher char and heat temperature rate before failure occurs. The Warnock -Hersey test listed above was designed and based on a defectively constructed ceiling. In regards to the open joist portion of the wood ceiling assembly, in addition to the testing performed, we do an engineering analysis taking into consideration the wood timber sizes, spacing, spans and imposed live loads to determine an allowable char to occur that will maintain the structural integrity of the assembly. This methodology is the same used when determining coating thicknesses to be applied to steel beams and columns. In the case of your wood "I" joists web trusses, based on our testing and using the failure of the OSB joist material, we allowed for no fire performance time to the "I" joist material. Based on the extensive testing performed, it is to be noted that the coating, on wood, in a ceiling fire condition performs at the rate of 1.04 minutes per dry mil applied. Based on the testing performed and the engineers calculations based on your `I" joist size, spacing, spans and imposed live load, we are recommending the following coating thicknesses be applied as follows: Material coverage/gal. 1. Entire "I" joist trusses 2. 1/2" wood sheathing Coating thickness 45 mils dry/ 68 mils wet 45 mils dry/ 68mils wet Square foot 23.5 23.5 For the 14" "I" joists exposed at 3 sides = 2.84 square feet per lineal foot. For the plywood sub -floor, figure area square footage. For the specific detail you gave us on the ceiling, we don't necessary hold a one with 1/2" sheetrock to Uls., but there are two ways to look at this section of your system; First, we are basing on our fire test report WFC 00089 where we tested FF88 on full loaded wall over 1/2" sheetrock with 25 mils dry AND the review of our fire tests on Gyp with BCI joist. We take into consideration a 40% severity allowance due in part because a horizontal test is generally a more severe, thus in the areas that have the existing 1 layer of 1/2"gypsum board, we are recommending a 35mils dry/53mils wet coating application be applied to those ceiling areas required to achieve the 1 hour rating. At 35 mils dry 30.5 sgft per gallon. Because this is a life safety issue, a third party special inspection by a qualified professional is required to insure compliance with the manufacturer's specifications, just as would be required for fire coatings applied to steel beams and columns. Enclosed with this email is the Warnock Hersey/Intertek fire test report, an engineer's assessment of the coating's performance of 1.4minute per dry film, spec data sheet and application instructions.
