Ms. Krystal Sperbeck of KPFF Consulting Engineers has provided us with structural loading information for the proposed clubhouse building. We previously presented a memorandum with preliminary recommendations on July 17, 2007. After that memorandum, we met with the design team to discuss the recommendations. Our laboratory testing program is being completed and we are currently in the process of preparing our final investigation report The proposed buildings can be either supported either on a mat foundation (Option 1) or on spread foundations interconnected with tie beams and supported on a reinforced soil mat (Option 2). In either case, we recommend that ground improvement be performed to a depth of 60 -feet below the existing ground surface in order to reduce calculated liquefaction effects. The foundation recommendations for these two options are described below. i Option 1: Mat Foundation The proposed' buildings may be supported on mat foundations over properly compacted fill soil, with deep soil mixing ground improvement 'beneath the properly compacted fill —layer: Mat- ir SEP >a 8 2007 J La Quints Counoy Club — Preliminmy Ceotechnical Recommendations August 7, 2007 MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc. Project 4953-07-0961 foundations may be designed to impose an average dead -plus -live soil pressure of up to 2,000 pounds per square foot. The mats may impose. up to 3,500 pounds per square foot bearing pressure on localized areas beneath the mat. A one-third increase may be used for wind or seismic loads. The mats should be underlain by at least 5 feet of properly compacted fill soils, extending at least 3 feet beyond the edges of the mats. Deep soil mixing should extend to a total depth of 60 feet below the current ground surface. The deep soil mixing should extend laterally 30 feet beyond the edge of the mat. For structural analyses of the mat foundation established in properly compacted fill soils, a vertical modulus of subgrade reaction of 125 pounds per cubic inch may be used. The subsidence - related settlement in the area has resulted in sporadic large settlement originating in very deep- seated soil beneath the site. Subsidence -related settlements are unrelated to the relatively light loads of the contemplated buildings. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the total settlement that may occur during the life of the building. However, we suggest total settlement could be on the order of about 6 inches. If ground improvement is performed, we estimate the differential settlement could be up to 2%z inches (consisting of 2 inches of static differential settlement and inch of seismic differential settlement) over a distance of about 50 feet. .Option 2: Conventional Spread Footings and Slabs supported on" Reinforced Soil Mat As an alterative to a mat foundation, the proposed buildings may be supported on conventional spread footings interconnected with grade beams. The foundations should be established over a reinforced soil mat. The reinforced soil mat will consist of a soil mass reinforced with up to five layers of geogrid placed at a vertical spacing of about % to 1-foot. The soil used within the soil mat should consist of base material. Deep soil mixing ground improvement should be performed beneath the reinforced soil mat to a depth of about 60 feet below the ground surface. Spread footingfoundations supported on a reinforced soil mat may be designed to impose a dead plus live soil pressures of 3,500 pounds per square foot. A one-third increase can be used for wind or seismic loads. We suggest total settlement could be on the order of about 6 inches. If a reinforced soil mat is used, we estimate the differential settlement could be up to 1 inch (consisting of % inch of static differential settlement and '/2 inch of seismic differential settlement) over a distance of about 50 feet. Both Options: Lateral loads may be resisted by soil friction and by the passive resistance of the soils. A coefficient of friction of 0.4 may be used between the structure footings/mat and the floor slab and the supporting soils. The passive resistance of properly compacted fill soils may be assumed to be equal to the .pressure developed by a fluid with a density of 250 pounds per cubic foot. A one-third increase in the passive value may be used for wind or seismic loads. The frictional resistance and the passive resistance of the soils may be combined without reduction in determining the total lateral resistance. 92
