RE: CRIME INSURANCE ANNUAL RENEWAL
The City’s Crime Insurance policy expires effective December 3, 2020.
Staff’s research shows that the City has been obtaining Crime insurance coverage
through The Hartford Crimeshield Advanced (Hartford) since at least 2009 at an average
of $3,000 per year (quote is provided by NFP, the City’s insurance broker/agent). To
our knowledge, at this time, we are unaware of any claims the City has ever filed against
this insurance coverage, and staff has requested a copy of the City’s crime runs report
to confirm this 100%.
The City has been a member of the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority
(CJPIA) since its inception in 1997 and obtains the majority of its insurance coverages
through the CJPIA. The CJPIA has a long-standing exceptional rapport with the City in
all areas, including customer service, trainings, and one-on-one assistance whenever
needed. CJPIA contracts crime insurance coverage through Alliant. The City has been
obtaining its Property, Vehicle, and Mechanical Breakdown insurance policy through
Alliant since 2013 (switched from Hayward Tilton) and has had a very positive
experience with Alliant’s expertise, customer service, and impeccable efficiency in
processing claims on behalf of the City.
Staff requested a quote for Crime insurance coverage from the CJPIA to compare
it to the City’s current coverage through Hartford; the table below summarizes the cost
and coverage offered:
CJPIA /
ALLIANT
CJPIA /
ALLIANT
NFP /
HARTFORD
Annual Premium: $1,800
$1,575 $3,208
Single Loss Limit: $1 million
$1 million $1 million
Single Loss Deductible: $5,000
$10,000 5,000
Based on the facts and findings outlined above, Staff recommends the City obtain
coverage through CJPIA.
