RE: Lateral Displacement & Design Philosophy
Tha Cart Storage Area (Ground Floor) has been designed based on
th(� assumption that the Spancrete resting on top of the CMU walls
is acting as a rigid diaphragm. The calculations shown on pp. 181-189
art°= based on a horizontal force distribution analysis for a rigid diaphragm
wh, re all lateral forces are distributed to each wall on the basis of relative
rig, Jities and wall locations. The lateral deflection at this level will be of
cor,siderably less magnitude than that of the more flexible wood structure
ah{ ie the Spancrete level.
The portion of the building above the Spancrete, consisting primarily of
w3,)d contruction with steel moment frames, was designed to be suported
on this much stiffer base. Relatively speaking, the wood structure will
allow much greater lateral displacements than the rigid base it is resting. on.
