Fabel, Stuart - RFQ Submission• 1. COVER LETTER-Tell us a bit about yourself. I am originally from Brigantine which is a small island next to Atlantic City in New Jersey. I gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Mason Gross College of the Arts at Rutgers University of NJ, in Theatrical Design, emphasis in Lighting Design. Relocating to our Desert Valley 20 years ago, where I held roles of Lighting Designer at the Key Club at Morongo Casino, as w ell as the same role at Caltech in Pasadena (where as a staff member was fortunate to attend Art Classes). I was later offered by a colleague a technician position with PSAV Audio Visual (now ENCORE) where shortly after joining the company was offered the role of Director of Event Technology to which I have held for the last 7 years. Peppered during the last 20 years other projects I have been fortunate to light include the World Premieres of Ray Bradbury’s 2016 (US premier; Laguna Beach & Pasadena), while the European Premier at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. I have designed many productions at Palm Canyon Theatre, Green Room Theatre, and College of the Desert. While being a mentor and donating my time at CVHS under the former Direction of Bob Reinhagen, and John Glenn Middle School under the Direction of Lynn Schwim mer. While also being a guest “artist-painter” at Amelia Earhart Elementary School’s annual “Arts and Authors” night, under the guidance of Lora Lee Stolzoff. The last 5 years I have been extremely fortunate to be the lighting designer for Terri Nunn and Berlin (of Take My Breath Away fame), which included their recent Palm Desert Civic Park Concert Series held in May of 2019. I appreciate traveling and exploring new places with my girlfriend of 12 years, a few favorites include; Bora Bora, a bicycle and barge tour through the Netherlands, and a Volkswagen Westfallia trip exploring the northwest and later New England. We both enjoy cooking and gardening (she is the head of the Garden Club at Amelia Earhart) and combing them both can make a d elightful meal to enjoy under our desert skies. • A) Do you have any prior experience doing this kind of work? I have been painting for over 25 years, yet have not painted any public art pieces and or spaces; though feel the electrical boxes make an ideal canvas. • C) 6 Selected Works Provided Below I chose to include part of the grill to provide a sense of scale for this painting Work size :42”x 30” Medium: Acrylic on wood Subject matter - cooking - cutting board Influence - cooking class taken in Bali This photo once again is meant to include the patio furniture / table to show scale. I would be open to painting boxes located throughout the city, though living across from the Amelia Earhart Elementary School , LQHS and the new skate park, would like to include one of the boxes in this neighborhood. • Can you walk us through a brief explanation of your plan? Who will be involved, supplies, equipment, timeframe, etc. I was enthused in talking with Jaime previously and now with Michael regarding the process and touched on various art themes; hence I have created a plan for 5 boxes , from which the council may consider as few or as many as they like. Michael and I discussed the “business corridor” along highway 111 is a recent location that could be “brightened up”. I feel the painting ideas #1 & #2 would be ideal for this. Though am open to suggestions. 1) A desert mountain vista, incorporating our beautiful skies, dotted with a few hot air balloons. 2) A flora – shrub motif, with a roadrunner and or hummingbirds. This would blend in with the various fauna around which the box is located. 3) Bike Riders, as an avid cyclist, enjoying the Tour de Palm Springs for 20 years and the Patriot Ride through our desert cities, La Quinta has some amazing bike routes. Hence what better way to motivate and inspire not only fellow cyclist’s but families as well to enjoy the many “bike paths” offered. This could be done on an electrical box of the councils choosing to promote this outdoor activity. 4) Hiking, is another amazing activity in our valley, as the city offers many hiking paths, to explore and enjoy our desert vist as. This could once again be located in an area, perhaps near the cove to help bring awareness of another activity that the city has to offer. 5) I would like to do a school theme located in the area of the councils choice, which could be held in conjunction with the surrounding schools as a “contest” and or community involvement project. I would be the only one involved in the painting aspects, keeping supplies minimal as the boxes are relatively small in size, a chair, milk crate to hold paint cans along with brushes, water, a few t owels to clean brushes, and tarp as to keeping the area clean. Regarding the time frame of the project, once the council provides me with approval, I would do a sketch – to present my idea with in the week. The time frame the actual painting would require is expected to be 3-5 days per electrical box, taking into account weather conditions that occur in our desert winters along with complexity of the project. Hence, I feel the overall time period from inception to completion of each art piece would be within 2-3 weeks. • 3) Will there be any costs? I am overly thrilled to be able to donate my time, and give back to the community and feel that the paint costs can be off-set through the city via the funding for this project. I already own brushes, tarps and other supplies needed, except for the actual paint. I anticipate the paint costs to be appro ximately $350 to accommodate 2 or 3 boxes. This is priced out at roughly 3- $30 gallon cans of a base color, and 5-10 smaller cans priced at $15 -$20 each.
