Laboratory testing indicated soluble sulfate content of 20 ppm (0.002 percent) that corresponds with the "negligible" exposure category in accordance with Table 3 of ACI 318-08 Chapter 9. In accordance with ACI 318-08, special sulfate resistant concrete mix designs should not be required for structural concrete on this project. A copy of the test results is attached. Box 1573 Rancho Mirage, California 92270 Project: Proposed Custom Residence 79-345 Tom Fazio Lane North The Quarry- Lot 52 La Quinta, California Subject: Geotechnical Update Ref: Geotechnical Engineering Report prepared by Buena Engineers, Inc. dated November 2, 1989; Job No. B7-1405-P1, Report No. 89-10-831 As requested, the following information is provided as it relates to the design and construction of the custom residence proposed for lot 52 located at 79-345 Tom Fazio Lane North within The Quarry at La Quinta development in the City of La Quinta, California. The referenced Geotechnical Engineering Report was prepared for the Quarry at La Quinta project site prior to development. The residential lot was originally rough graded during the initial development of the Quarry at La Quinta project site. Geotechnical observations and compaction testing were performed during the rough grading and are summarized in a rough grading report prepared by Buena Engineers, Inc. Previous grading included recompaction of the underlying native soil and the placement of engineered fill material to construct the subject lot and adjacent lots. The previous grading report provides documentation of the grading operations and confirms that the rough grading was performed in accordance with the recommendations of the referenced Geotechnical Engineering Report and applicable grading codes. Remedial Grading: Because the lot has been previously rough graded, the remedial grading work necessary at this time should be minimal. Prior to grading, the surface should be stripped of the existing vegetation and the associated root systems. The surface soil should be watered and the surface should be recompacted to correct any disturbance that may occur during clearing operations. Any fill material placed within the building areas should be placed in thin lifts at near optimum moisture content and compacted to at least 90 percent relative compaction. Compaction should be verified by testing. CJ Sladden Engineering March 31, 2016 -2- Project No. 544-16075 16-03-125 Structural Considerations: The structural recommendations included in the referenced Geotechnical Engineering Report remain valid. Allowable bearing pressures, lateral pressures and frictional coefficients as outlined in the referenced report should be applicable for foundation design. These structural values are summarized below. Conventional shallow spread footings should be bottomed into properly compacted fill material at least 12 inches below lowest adjacent grade. Continuous footings should be at least 12 inches wide and isolated pad footings should be at least 2 feet wide. Continuous footings and isolated pad footings may be designed using allowable bearing pressures of 1800 psf and 2000 psf, respectively. Allowable increases of 200 psf for each additional 1 foot of width and 300 psf for each additional 6 inches of depth may be utilized if desired. The maximum allowable bearing pressure should be 2500 psf. The recommended allowable bearing pressures may be increased by one-third when considering wind and seismic loading. Resistance to lateral loads can be provided by a combination of friction acting at the base of the slabs or foundations and passive earth pressure along the sides of the foundations. A coefficient of friction of 0.48 between soil and concrete may be used with dead load forces only. A passive earth pressure of 300 pounds per square foot, per foot of depth, may be used for the sides of footings that are placed against properly compacted native soil. The bearing soil is non -expansive and falls within the "very low" expansion category in accordance with 2013 California Building Code (CBC) classification criteria. Slab thickness and reinforcement should be determined by the structural engineer, we recommend a minimum floor slab thickness of 4.0 inches and minimal reinforcement of #3 base at 24 inches on center in each direction. All slab reinforcement should be supported on concrete chairs to ensure that reinforcement is placed at slab mid -height. The seismic design category for the structure may be determined in accordance with Section 1613 of the 2013 CBC or ASCE7. According to the 2013 CBC, Site Class D may be used to estimate design seismic loading for the proposed structure. The 2013 CBC Seismic Design Parameters are summarized below. Risk Category (Table 1.5-1): I/11/III Site Class (Table 1613.3.2): D Ss (Figure 1613.3.1): 1.500g S1 (Figure 1613.3.1): 0.600g Fa (Table 1613.3.3(1)): 1.0 Fv (Table 1613.5.3(2)): 1.5 Sms (Equation 16-37 {Fa X Ssl): 1.500g Sm1 (Equation 16-38 {Fv X Si)): 0.900g SDS (Equation 16-39 12/3 X Sms)): 1.000g SD1 (Equation 16-40 12/3 X Smi)): 0.600g Seismic Design Category: D Sladden Engineering ,l March 31, 2016 -3- Project No. 544-16075 16-03-125 We appreciate the opportunity to provide service to you on this project, if you have any questions regarding this letter or the referenced reports please contact the undersigned. (K.M. Kripanarayanan, S.E.) to address and satisfy review comments provided by Bronz Young, I have since diligently worked with Kripa to bring this project up to full seismic safety standards. It is my professional opinion, as a Structural Engineer who has designed many structures in Southern California, that our final design submission (accompanied by this letter) meets the intent of the code, and that the steel frame structure will be both safe and serviceable even after the largest probable earthquake to strike during the reasonable lifespan of this structure. The latest drawing package satisfies the following comments from Mr. Young's December 8th Review: 7E, 7F,10, 32 Per our phone conversation, Kripa and I concur that our steel connection design using R=1(350% above analysis force levels) satisfies the following comments, and that further calculations are unwarranted: 7A, 7B, 7C, 7D, 7G Lastly, comment 7H has been addressed with a supplemental calculation in the calc report. Thank you again for your patience and assistance on this project. We plan to incorporate the lessons learned from this project into future projects so that the steel framing is immediately satisfactory to reviewers.
