Public Art Collection Assessments/Surveys : Miami Beach Public Art Collection Assessment (2007):The developers of the City of Miami Beach incorporated fountains and monuments into the streetscapes of the city that they built on the barrier island off South F lorida. Constructed entirely of concrete, the Mediterranean Revival and Art Deco features continue to enliven the vibrant seaside community. The collection includes several sculptures as well as fountains, towers, and memorials installed throughout the city. Dating from the early to mid-20th century, these elements suffered from wear, insufficient past repairs, and exposure to the elements (including extreme events of hurricanes and automobile accidents). CSI was contracted to assess the condition of each and prepare treatment recommendations for the collection. Working with Douglas Wood Assoc. Engineers, each monument was documented and assessed. Conditions requiring treatment were noted and prioritized.Recommendations for treatment and budgetary cost estimates were prepared. City of Calgary Public Art Collections Assessment and Conservation Plan (2016-2017):The City of Calgary has a vast public art collection, consisting of nearly 1300 indoor and outdoor artworks highlighting a wide variety of media and materials, including lighting and electronic features, mixed-media, ceramics, metals, textiles, paintings, prints, photography, stone, and synthetic. Over a multi-year contract, CSI carried out a thorough collection-wide survey and developed a detailed conservation plan to facilitate the collection’s long-term care. As part of this work, CSI reviewed each individual artwork, evaluated the collections database and its usage, and made recommendations to improve policies and procedures that impact the maintenance and overall health of the collection. CSI provided individual reports for each artwork in the collection that outlined artwork conditions, treatment and maintenance recommendations, and rough order of magnitude costing estimates. The results of the survey were assembled and interpreted to inform CSI’s development of an over -arching conservation and maintenance plan for the city’s public art. This project required comprehensive written skills to produce the project’s report deliverables. Excellent wri tten and oral communication skills were also critical to ensure clear communication throughout the project. Wolfsonian Museum Object Assessment –Miami, FL (2007):The Wolfsonian-FIU Museum in Miami Beach, Florida houses a significant collection of icons of twentieth-century design. The objects housed in its Art Deco building represent the range and character of the styles associated with the period. Conservation Solutions, Inc. was contracted by the museum to assess two of their artifacts in preparation for an exhibition. The first artifact was an architect’s presentation model of the Perisphere and Trylon, an emblem of the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Fabricated of polished stainless steel and chrome -plated brass with wood 7 details, the model depicts the architect’s design for the Theme Center building. The second artifact was a painted wood model of a futuristic car. CSI conservators studied each object, documented its conditions, and developed treatment recommendations for each item. The museum then performed the work based on CSI’s recommendations before loaning the artifacts for exhibition. Alberta Foundation for the Arts –Collections Assessment (2015):Established in 1972, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) is a crown agency of the Gove rnment of Alberta with the mandate to collect, preserve, and display works of Albertan art. The Collection consists of over 8,500 artworks highlighting the creative talents of more than 1,700 artists, presented in a wide range of media including paintings, photography, prints, drawings, ceramics, glass, fiber, sculpture, mixed media, multimedia, and installations.Conservation Solutions was contracted to carry out an assessment of 5900 of the AFA’s current artwork holdings and develop a multi-year strategy including recommendations for treatment, care, handling and exhibition procedures as well as facility and overall storage conditions.Treatments were prioritized based on condition and status of the artwork.Work was completed on time and in budget. Public Art Assessment –City of Alexandria, VA (2012):The City of Alexandria, Virginia, sponsors and maintains a wide and varied collection of public art for its residents, businesses, and visitors. Ranging from bronze sculptures to murals, modern concrete castings, and mixed media community projects, the collection comprises many different materials in varying forms, styles, and levels of deterioration. CSI performed a survey and condition assessment of this collection, which included both public and some privately-owned artworks. Beyond documenting existing conditions in one concise narrative, CSI also developed preliminary recommendations for treatment along with conservation priorities. This was presented along with a preliminary budget for the treatment of each to help the city better plan for its short term and long-term sculpture conservation needs. The final report included a written narrative and extensive photo -documentation, along with a spreadsheet matrix summarizing recommendations and costs. Public Art Assessment –City of Asheville, NC (2006):Traditional center for the arts and crafts movement in western North Carolina, the City of Asheville has made a serious effort to enrich its public spaces with commissioned works of art that tell of the city’s history and culture.CSI inspected, documented, and a catalogue of the existing conditions was developed. Areas of loss or deterioration were documented. The mountings and sites were studied, and recommendations were made for improvements to reduce the potential for theft or further vandalism. The severity of conditions was ranked and prioritized.Recommendations for treatment and budgetary cost estimates were included with the report. Work was completed on time and in budget. Conservation Assessments and Treatments of Modern Materials and Public Art: Assessment of George Sugarman’s Sculpture Untitled –Tampa, FL (2006):In 2006, Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) conducted a condition assessment of George Sugarman’s sculpture,Untitled, erected in 1988 in downtown Tampa, Florida. The assessment was geared to provide conservation treatment recommendations as well as guidelines for the relocation of the work. The thirty-four-foot-tall steel sculpture was accessed with a man -lift 8 and inspected from the ground. Recommendations for the rigging and r emoval of the sculpture were developed for the complex site, and a treatment plan was provided at the completion of the project. Charles O.Perry, Untitled, Sculpture Conservation –Miami Beach, FL (2009-2011):In a multi- part project, CSI conservators performed a condition assessment of the Charles O.Perry sculpture,Untitled, in Miami Beach, Florida. CSI provided a materials-focused assessment that emphasized conservation treatment goals, and offered additional recommendations regarding specific materials and methods to be employed for the sculpture’s restoration. Recommendations were made for coating removal and cleaning; repairs to damaged elements; surface treatments on exterior steel; and storage. Conservators sampled existi ng coatings, established paint chromachronologies, and matched the original colors to a modern commercial paint system. CSI worked in consultation with the artist , and provided conservation oversight of the treatment, which was implemented by local craftsmen. Fernando Botero’s Bronze Sculpture Conservation –St. Petersburg, FL (2010):CSI conserved three monumental fine art bronze sculptures by renowned Colombian artist,Fernando Botero, that were on temporary exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, Florida in 2010. Each bronze:Hand, The Rape of Europa, Smoking Woman, had the characteristic fine finish, bulbous forms and troubling presence of the best of Botero’s work . CSI worked with Gulf Coast Art Conservation to clean the works, retouch the damages, and apply a new coating of specially formulated wax using the hot wax method .They were displayed as part of a comprehensive exhibition of paintings, drawings, and scul pture by the artist at the museum. Dalle de Verre Window Conservation at the National Youngarts Foundation –Miami, FL (2014 –2015):The stunningly beautiful walls of the “Jewel Box” annex of the Bacardi Building in Miami were produced in the early 1970s by the world -renowned glass artist Gabriel Loire and his studio, Ateliers Loire. At night the building becomes a glowing jeweled box as the interior lighting comes on. Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) was engaged in 2014 to study the epoxy bedded glass walls, develop a conservation scope and oversee its implementation. Research and study included extensive communications with the arti st’s atelier in France in order to develop a scope of work for the windows. CSI oversaw the conservation work performed by Femenella Associates.Standards of maximum retention of original material, minimal intervention, and thorough documentation were adhered to throughout this ground- breaking effort to preserve this unique building. Morse Museum Laurelton Hall Tiffany Works –Winter Park, FL(2006): Laurelton Hall was built by Louis Comfort Tiffany between 1902 and 1905. To showcase his studio’s glass and decorative arts and his unique eclectic design sensibilities. Tragically, the building was destroyed by fire in 1957, and the damaged fragments that could be salvaged have remained hidden in storage for fifty years. Conservation Solutions, Inc. was contrac ted by the Morse Museum of American Art to conserve the stone elements and glass capitals of the Daffodil Terrace and the marble and mosaic dining room fireplace in preparation for an exhibition of the remaining Laurelton Hall fragments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Conservation work was performed in collaboration with Griswold Conservation Associates, and involved the moving, careful and intricate cleaning, and repair of the various marble, glass, and mortar components. Missing elements from the firep lace, mosaic clocks, and terrace were re- created and faux-finished to match the originals. A structural system was designed and built to support the fireplace and allow for easy assembly and disassembly of the piece. After the 9 year-long restoration was complete, the artifacts were crated and shipped to the Metropolitan Museum where they were installed and reunited with other artifacts from Laurelton Hall for the first time in half a century. Storm King Art Centre, Louise Bourgeois’ The No March Conservation –Mountainville, NY (2006):Louise Bourgeois’The No March consists of over 1,000 marble cores positioned in wave-like rows that swell in height as they crowd into a corner. After it was acquired by the Storm King Art Center, the sculpture was mounted on a raised platform, significantly changing the artist’s intended effect. Over time the mar ble pieces became soiled from the weather and visitors’ inquisitive touches. Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) was contracted to perform a thorough treatment of the work, which included removing the mounting system, cleaning the marble elements, and remou nting the cores in a manner more consistent with the original installation. Exact locations and orientations of each stone had to be maintained throughout the work. Locations were therefore carefully documented, mapped, and tracked in an inventory. Stones were cleaned with detergents, anti-microbial biocide, and gently pressurized water. The mountings were modified to the new system and the cores were installed on aluminum plates, color -matched to the gallery floor. Once the treatment was complete, the installation was exhibited as the artist intended it for the first time in more than 30 years. Tony Smith Sculpture Conservation, Frances Perkins Building –Washington DC (2004):This steel sculpture by Tony Smith was fabricated in 1975. The angled rectangula r sculpture is large in scale, measuring thirty feet high and twenty -four feet wide. Located in a small courtyard near the Frances Perkin Building, the sculpture was beginning to show deterioration caused by entrapped water within its hollow interior. The water penetration has resulted in some loss of the surface coating and the corrosion of the ferrous substrate. Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) was engaged to inspect the sculpture and develop means to stabilize it pending its upcoming relocation. Existing conditions were documented, standing water was removed, and the steel was treated with the application of a corrosion inhibitor. An existing hatch on the sculpture was modified to allow for ventilation of the interior without allowing water entry. Drain age slots were also installed at the base of the sculpture to prevent against future water issues and degradation. Jun Kaneko And Ursula von Rydingsvard Modern Outdoor Sculpture Conservation –Watch Hill, RI (2017):CSI assessed and treated a private colle ction of modern outdoor sculpture in Rhode Island in 2017. The sculpture collection includes a large glazed ceramic sphere by artist Jun Kaneko, and a tall whirlwind-like bronze by Ursula von Rydingsvard. These sculptures were installed in the last few years, and required maintenance work to ward off deterioration caused by the New England marine environment. Conservation Solutions, Inc. was contracted to perform an assessment of the works in the collectio n, and carry out treatment on the Kaneko and von Rydingsvard sculptures. The treatment of the von Rydingsvard bronze sculpture involved removal of insect nests and organic deposits, overall washing, and the application of a conservation grade wax protectiv e coating. The Kaneko ceramic sculpture had begun to show signs of potential glaze failure, with some crazing and minor losses. Its treatment therefore included the consolidation of lifting glaze surrounding the losses with an ethyl silicate based product, and the filling of losses with a color-matched, bulked acrylic. Reports outlining the treatment work performed on each sculpture, as well as maintenance recommendations for their future care, were provided to the client upon completion of the project. 10 Assessment of Baron Rudolph Carl von Ripper’s One Nation Indivisible Mural -Fort Bliss, TX (2015):Conservation Solutions was engaged to document, assess, and develop conservation plans for this mural on a military building in Fort Bliss, dating to the Seco nd World War. The mural was painted directly on an exterior wall without the appropriate preparation necessary for its long-term preservation. Later, the mural was encapsulated in a false wall that was built over it. The mural was once again revealed intac t but in poor condition as part of an initial Army plan to decommission and demolish the building. CSI’s assessment was geared to develop a plan to remove the mural prior to the demolition of the building. Working with specialists in paint conservation, ri gging, and photography, CSI thoroughly documented the mural’s existing conditions, studied and tested the stability of the paint layer, building and site, and developed plans to stabilize, face, remove, and re -back the mural. Flora Aluminum Sculpture Assessment, Hopkins Square –Baltimore, MD Flora (2014):This contemporary aluminum sculpture Flora was commissioned by the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore (DPOB) in 2012. The sculpture consists of a central bud of aluminum tubes surrounded by eight curling aluminum petals. The bud had been coated with a high- performance paint system, and each petal intricately hand-textured and clear-coated. In 2014, Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) was contracted by the DPOB to perform a condition assessment of the sculpture, which had started. to display visible deterioration after having been installed for only 6 months. The goal of the assessment was to identify the sources of degradation and any aspects of the sculpture’s inherent vice that contributed to the sculpture’s rapid deterioration. CSI’s on-site assessment identified areas of coating failure and subsequent aluminum corrosion, biological soiling, and selective paint failure. Through this assessment as well as through extensive product research and consultation with the artist and fabricator, CSI was able to identify several possible contributing factors to the sculpture’s deterioration. The findings were summarized in a final report, which also included recommendations for mock-ups to evaluate before a future treatment could be finalized. Modern Sculpture Conservation, Swiss Embassy –Washington DC (2004 –2005):In preparation for a major reconstruction of the grounds of the Swiss Embassy, Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) was contracted to remove, conserve, and temporarily store several bronze and steel modern sculptures that were installed on the property. The works that were to be removed were hoisted and brought to the CSI studio, while one sculpture was able to be left in-situ and treated on-site. The steel sculptures were cleaned of failed coatings by blasting to bright metal before being treated with a high performance three -component coating system. The treatment of the bronze sculpture involved cleaning by waterjetting, re - patination, and the application of a protective lacquer coating. The works were stored at the CSI studio until the work on the Swiss Embassy grounds was complete, and they could be reinstalled on their native land. Assessment of Itzik Ben Shalom’s Modern Bronze Sculpture –Austin, TX (2012):This monumental bronze sculpture by Itzik Ben Shalom (circa 1985) was installed in a public square in Austin from 1986-2009, then moved to another location. After it was deinstalled again in 2012, it was discovered to have major corrosion in the steel internal infrastructure to the extent that reinstallation would present a safety hazard. Conservation Solutions, Inc. was engaged to assess the extent of the damage, and provide recommendations for its repair and reinstallation. 11 Assessment of Tony Smith’s Cigarette, at the John D. Rockefeller Estate –Sleepy Hollow, NY (2017):Cigarette is a mid-20th century painted steel sculpture by Century American Sculptor Tony Smith, installed on the grounds of Kykuit, the John. D. Rockefeller Estate. Conservation Solutions, Inc. was contracted to carry out a detailed condition assessment of the sculpture in preparation for a planned re -painting campaign. CSI investigated both interior and exterior surfaces of the sculpture, and surveyed and tested the paint layers . Assessment of the paint layers included inspection, pull off tests, and micrographic paint stratigraphy. After evaluating the results of the assessment and testing, CSI developed plans to remove the existing failing paint system and re-coat the work. Columbia University Public Art Restoration and Conservation –New York City, NY(1997 – Present):Over CSI’s long history of collaboration with Columbia University, CSI’s work has involved assessing materials, design and site considerations for the relocation of Henry Moore’s sculpture Reclining Figure from the residential property of its donor to the campus. CSI has also restored and conserved over 20 different works of public art around the campus ranging in age from late 19th century to modern and contemporary pieces, executed in a variety of materials including bronze, stone, and steel; works include a casting of The Thinker (Auguste Rodin),Curl (Clement Meadmore),Life Force (David Bakalar). Condition Assessments and Disa ster Preparedness Plans: Ringling Museum Hurricane Damage Assessment –Tampa, FL (2017):Storm conditions caused by Hurricane Irma resulted in damage to a number of historic exterior art features at the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, located in Saras ota, FL. Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) was contracted to perform an assessment of the damages and provide a cost evaluation for repairs to the features. CSI provided detailed condition assessments of the hurricane damaged features, outlined treatment recommendations, and provided budgetary cost estimates for the required salvage work. CSI holds additional contracts for conditions assessments and treatments relating to architectural and sculptural features of the Ringling Museum and the Ca'd’Zan Estate Perez Art Museum Outdoor Sculpture Hurricane Damage Assessment and Treatment –Miami, FL (2017):In the aftermath of hurricane Irma, CSI carried out inspections and condition assessments of the Perez Art Museum outdoor sculpture collection. Numerous 20 th century modern artworks were inspected, and treatment recommendations were made for hurricane damage response, as well as to address on-going exposure to the marine sub- tropical environment. Treatment recommendations provided options for short -term maintenance strategies that could be performed as soon as possible, as well as longer -term treatments that would require removing the works from their sites. Following the assessment work, CSI was contracted to perform treatments on a selection of hurricane- damaged artworks. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens –Miami, FL (2009-2017): Over a multi-year, multi-phase contract, CSI conserved over 100 outdoor sculptures, architectural elements, antiquities, and fountains for the National Historic Landmark. This work was based off initial hurricane response and disaster relief assessments following the 2005 and 2017 hurricanes, which damaged the site.In response to the 2005 work, CSI completed numerous cleaning and repair campaigns for stabilizing the outdoor and indoor works. The project required excellent organization to develop and track individual scopes of work for each element, manage their 12 conservation over the geographic distribution of this large site, ensure full documentation throughout the process, and manage the budget in an efficient way that allowed for maximum treatment of the greatest number of artifacts to the highest conservation standards in accordance with the client’s stated goals and priorities. This project required comprehensive written skills, both to produce the project report deliverables and also to manage written communications with the client through the project. Oral communications skills were also critical to clear communication throughout. Visual aids and site plans were produced and regularly updated by CSI to track all aspects of the work. FEMA Response Team Hearst Castle –Cambria,CA (2004):CSI conservators were part of the FEMA response team, who worked with the California State Parks, who work closely with expert conservators to keep this historical estate preserved properly. On December 22, 2003 a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the San Simeon region. Fortunately, this disaster did not destroy the structural exterior of the Hearst Castle, but did leave damaged objects throughout the landmark—due to the disaster the Castle was eligible for public assistance funding.CSI reviewed the site survey summary and treatment recommendations provided by California State Park conservators for the stabilization of twelve objects, developed to stabilize or reverse damage associated with the effects of the disaster. Objects were reviewed by CSI through a systematic procedure, which generated a comprehensive spreadsheet including descriptions of the damaged objects, recommended treatment, and budgetary analysis for each individual artifact. FEMA evaluated the assessment needs and assigned the project to the appropriate conservation team. Louisiana State Office Mosaic Hurricane Assessment –New Orleans, LA (2008):The State Office Building Annex, and example of mid -century modern architecture, was so severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2006 that the State had to call for demolish ing the building. The state hoped to preserve the glass mosaic by Conrad Albrizio that was installed in the building’s 2nd floor lobby in 1956. Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) was brought in to assess the condition of the mosaic and determine means and methods for removing and salvaging it for installation in a new building. CSI conservators inspected the mosaic, its backing, and the site conditions. They determined that it would be possible to face the mosaic and remove it in three large sections, following existing crack lines so as to introduce minimal damage to the artwork. CSI provided the client with a plan to remove, re-back, and safely store the mosaic once it was removed. 13 ADDITIONAL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION -RESUMES JOSEPH SEMBRAT Owner & Principal Conservator PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATION American Institute for Conservation (AIC); Fellow 2004 Canadian Association of Professional Conservators (CAPC-ACRP); Professional Member 2013 Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP); Professional Member 2013 Canadian Association for Conservation (CAC/ACCR); Member 2013 AREAS OF EXPERTISE Materials Conservation Architectural Conservation Artifacts Conservation Surveying and Condition Assessments Testing and Analysis Quality Control and Oversight Contract Drawings and Specifications Research and Documentation Artifact Mounting and Exhibition Service EXPERIENCE Joseph Sembrat has been immersed in the conservation field for over 25 years.
