La Quinta City Officials …
The purpose of this email is to advise you that I object most strenuously to the proposed Coral
Mountain Resort Wave Park!
• The developer’s rhetoric of wan;ng to be a good neighbor is the decep;ve narra;ve here. A
good neighbor does not ask for a zoning change to an exis;ng parcel of land to
accommodate 100% short term vaca;on rentals catering to transient visitors. This is in conflict
with all the many efforts around La Quinta and elsewhere in the Coachella valley to restrict
short term rentals.
• This proposed “Disneyland” for surfers would be a huge waste of water, which by all accounts
is not a resource that should be squandered, in light of our long-term draught condi;ons. It is
not fair to impose mandated conserva;on efforts on established golf courses and residents,
while allowing such an egregious waste of millions of gallons of water for a wave park.
• If the property in ques;on is rezoned, and this project approved, then light, traffic, and noise
pollu;on will increase drama;cally in what is now a quiet and peaceful ALL RESIDENTIAL area.
• Kelly Slater, himself, was featured in an ar;cle published on December 15th 2021. Here’s what
he had to say about surfing at the Surf Ranch located in Lemoore, CA
where the ar;ficial wave basin features his technology: “I think people are bored with it. The
same wave over and over again." So, in the long term, this ridiculous a=rac;on could very
well wind up being a massive flop, as well as an eyesore in our otherwise beau;ful desert
community.
• The General Plan of this City must not be changed to accommodate the whims of Developers -
tourist commercial zoning and the resul;ng development has no place inserted amongst
exis;ng quiet established residen;al communi;es. If this thing had already been built as
proposed, I would not have purchased my home where I did.
The developer is downplaying all these points because they don’t care about this community … they are only
interested in ge‘ng their way and gaining whatever financial profits might be made from this venture. There
is no doubt that they are appealing strenuously to you, our City Officials to allow them to move forward with
this project. However, I would like to remind you that you were not elected by the developer, nor do you work
for the developer. You were elected by the residents of La Quinta, and you work for the residents of La
Quinta. I know you are aware of the opinion of La Quinta residents on this ma=er, and I have witnessed
mee;ngs wherein you heard the objec;ons of your resident cons;tuents loud and clear. I submit to you that
it might very well prove to be detrimental to your con;nued poli;cal aspira;ons and careers, should you
choose to ignore your voters in favor of this interloper developer and whatever promises they may be making
to you all.
Thank you for your a=en;on to this ma=er.
Sincerely,
