Splices in two curtains (where used) shall not occur in the same location. xi. Use chairs or other support devices as required for proper clearance. xii. Rebar hairpins shall be centered in slabs and shall be wire tied to the slab reinforcing (if any). Rebar hairpins shall be continuous through walls and piers; lap splices in hairpins may only occur in the floor slab unless noted otherwise. xiii. Unless noted otherwise, openings in walls shall be reinforced with #5 bar on all sides of the opening. Reinforcing shall extend 24" min. past the edge of the opening. For one layer of wall reinforcing provide (1) #5 bar around openings, for two layers provide (2) #5 bars. C. Control joints in slabs on grade are recommended to control cracking. See plans for control joint spacing and details. D. Slabs and grade beams shall not have joints in a horizontal plane. All reinforcement shall be continuous through all construction joints. E. Floor slab thickness and reinforcing shown in these drawings are adequate to support typical uniform loads only. Mountain View Engineering has not designed the slab for any specific concentrated forces such as those from vehicles, storage racks, or heavy equipment (unless noted otherwise). F. Welding of rebar is not allowed unless specifically indicated in the drawings. All embedments, reinforcing, and dowels shall be securely tied to framework or to adjacent reinforcing prior to placement of the concrete. Tack welding of rebar joints in grade beams, walls, or cages is not allowed. Where welding of rebar is shown in the drawings, all rebar to be welded shall be ASTM A706 Grade 60. 4. Metal Studs, Joists, and Tracks A. Material: ASTM A653 Grade 33 (Fy = 33 k.s.i.) at 3g" or 6" studs or ASTM A653 Grade 50 Class 1 or 3 (Fy = 50 k.s.i.) at 8" studs as noted. B. All products shall be manufactured by a current member of the Steel Stud Manufacturers Association. C. Fabrication and construction shall comply with the latest edition of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), "Specification for the Design of Cold -Formed Steel Structural Members". D. Provide all accessories including, but not limited to, tracks, clips, web stiffeners, anchors, fastening devices, resilient clips, and other accessories required for a complete and proper installation, and as recommended by the manufacturer of the steel members used. E. Fastening of components shall be with self -drilling screws or welding. Screws or welds shall be as indicated in the drawings. All welds of galvanized steel shall be touched up with a zinc -rich paint. Wire tying of components shall not be permitted. F. Studs shall be plumbed, aligned, and securely attached to flanges of both upper and lower runners, except that in the case of interior, non -load bearing walls, studs need not be attached to upper or lower runners. G. Splices in axial load bearing members other than runner track shall not be permitted. H. Provide web stiffeners at all boxed and back-to-back headers above supports. J. Installation (Non -load bearing walls) i. Runners should be securely anchored to the supporting structure as shown in the drawings. ii. Jack studs or cripples shall be installed below window sills, above window and door heads, and elsewhere to furnish supports. iii. Lateral bracing shall be provided by use of gypsum board and gypsum sheathing or by horizontal straps or cold -rolled channels. Bracing shall conform to Section D3 of the AISI Specification. iv. Provisions for structure vertical movement shall be provided where indicated on the drawings. K. Installation (Axial load -bearing) i. Runners should be securely anchored to the supporting structure as shown in the drawings. ii. Complete, uniform and level bearing support shall be provided for the bottom runner. iii. Framing of wall openings shall include headers and supporting studs as indicated on the drawings. iv. Diagonally braced stud walls, as indicated in the drawings, shall be provided at locations designated as "shear walls" for frame stability and lateral load resistance. Additional studs, when necessary shall be positioned as indicated on the drawings to resist the vertical components. v. Splices in axially loaded studs shall not be permitted. L. Installation (Joists) i. Uniform and level joist bearing shall be provided at foundation walls by means of shims and/or non -shrink grout. ii. Joists shall be located directly over bearing studs or a load distribution member shall be provided at the top of the bearing wall. iii. Web stiffeners shall be provided at reaction points and/or points of concentrated loads where indicated on the drawings. iv. Joist bridging shall be provided where indicated on the drawings. v. Additional joist shall be provided under parallel partitions when the partition length exceeds one-half the joist span, also around all floor and roof openings, which interrupt one or more spanning members unless noted otherwise. vi. End blocking shall be provided where joist ends are not otherwise restrained from rotation. M. Shear Walls i. Studs shall be a minimum of 1g" by 32" with a g" return lip. Track shall be a minimum 14" by 32. Both studs and track shall have a minimum uncoated thickness of 33 mils (0.84 mm). ii. Studs shall be doubled (back to back) at shear wall ends. iii. Fasteners along the edges in shear panels shall placed not less than in from panel edges. iv. All shear panel edges shall be fully blocked. Where horizontal strap blocking is used to provide edge blocking, it shall be a minimum of 11" wide and of the same material and equal or greater thickness as the track and studs. v. Wood Structural Panel Sheathing a. Wood structural panel sheathing shall comply with DOC PS 1 or PS 2 and shall be manufactured using exterior glue. b. Wood structural panels shall be attached to steel framing with flat -head self -drilling tapping screws with a minimum head diameter of 0.292" (8mm). 3,, 8 c. Where 16 oriented strand board (OSB) is specified, 32" structural 1 plywood sheathing is permitted. d. Structural panels are permitted to be applied either parallel or perpendicular to framing. 5. Wood A. Wood Wall Sheathing: i. Shear walls shall be sheathed with 16 APA rated oriented strand board (OSB) sheathing and nailed with #6 screws @ 6" o.c. edge, and @ 12" o.c. field ii. Sheathing shall extend continuous from floor sill plate to top plate of upper wall and be nailed per the required edge spacing along the sill plate. iii. Fasteners shall be placed not less than 2" from the edge of panel and drive so that their head or crown is flush with the surface of the sheathing. iv. All horizontal edges shall be blocked with 2" nominal or wider framing. v. Where panels are applied on both faces of a wall or nail spacing is less than 4" o.c. one of the following must be used: a. Panel joints shall be offset to fall on different framing members or b. Framing at panel joints shall be 3" nominal or thicker or c. Framing at panel joints shall be (2) 2x fastened with (2) 10d nails @ 12" o.c. Nails on each side shall be staggered. vi. Structural panels are permitted to be applied either parallel or perpendicular to framing. B. Roof Sheathing i. Typical roof sheathing shall be 32" OSB fastened with #6 screws @ 6" o.c. on all edges, and @ 12" o.c. along intermediate framing members. ii. Wood structural panel sheathing shall comply with DOC PS 1 or PS 2 and shall be manufactured using exterior glue. iii. Install sheathing panels with long dimension at right angles to framing with end joints staggered. 6. Miscellaneous A. The project specifications are not superseded by the General Structural Notes. Notes and details on the drawings shall take precedence over General Structural Notes and typical details. Should any of the detailed instructions shown on the plans conflict with the General Structural Notes, or with each other, the strictest provisions shall govern. B. It is solely the responsibility of each contractor to follow all applicable safety codes and regulations during all phases of construction. The engineer is not engaged in, and does not supervise, construction. C. Erection, Shoring, and Bracing i. It is the contractor's responsibility to determine erection procedures and sequence, and to ensure the stability of the building and its component parts during erection. ii. It is solely the contractor's responsibility to provide any temporary shoring, bracing, guys, and tie downs that may be necessary to provide adequate vertical and lateral support. Such material is not shown on the drawings. Shoring and bracing shall remain in place until all permanent members are in place and all final connections are completed, including all roof and floor attachments. iii.
