The orifice design, with a K-Factor of 4.9 (70.6 metric*), allows the sprinkler’s efficient use of available water supplies for the hydraulically designed fire-protection system. The fast response glass bulb operating element and special deflector characteristics meet the challenges of residential sprinkler standards. The sprinkler is pre-assembled with a threaded adapter for installation with a low-profile small-diameter cover assembly installed flush to the ceiling. The two-piece design allows installation and testing of the sprinkler prior to installation of the cover plate. The “push-on”, “thread-off” design of the concealed cover plate assembly allows easy installation of the cover plate after the system has been tested and the ceiling finish has been applied, while also providing up to 1/2” (13 mm) of vertical adjustment. The cover assembly can be removed and reinstalled, allowing temporary removal of ceiling panels without taking the sprinkler system out of service or removing the sprinkler. The Electroless Nickel PTFE (ENT) coating has been investigated for installation in corrosive atmospheres and is C-UL-US-EU Listed as corrosion resistant as indicated in the Approval Charts. The ENT finish is only available for the sprinkler assembly, the cover plate is not plated. 2.listinGs and approvals Ul listed (c-Ul-Us-eU): Category VKKW Refer to the Approval Charts and Design Criteria on for C-UL-US-EU Listing requirements that must be followed. 3.tecHnical dataSpecifications:Minimum Operating Pressure: Refer to the Approval Chart.Maximum Working Pressure: 175 psi (12 bar). Continued heating of the exposed sprinkler causes the heat-sensitive liquid in the glass bulb to expand, causing the glass to shatter, releasing the yoke and pip cap and sealing spring assembly. . Water flowing through the sprinkler orifice strikes the deflector, forming a uniform spray pattern over a specific area of coverage determined by the water supply pres-sure at the sprinkler to extinguish or control the fire. 6. inspections, tests and maintenance Refer to NFPA 25 for Inspection, Testing and Maintenance requirements. 7. availability Viking Sprinkler Model VK494 is available through a network of domestic and international distributors. Bins are placed at each of the design area fire sprinklers. These head locations are provided with an adapter extending down from the ceiling level and provided with a 1/4 turn .5-inch ball valve. The piping for this adapter shall not be greater than the pipe serving that particular head (i.e. 3/4”). An additional 5gal bucket is provided for measuring domestic demand at spigot nearest fire riser. Inspector will be at riser and domestic spigot with contractor, stopwatch ready. Helper(s) will be at the 2 design heads. Through communication on phone or radio, signal “All Start.” Everyone turns on their valves and stopwatch is started. Once the 5gal bucket at Dom spigot is at reasonable max fill, signal “All Stop”. Everyone closes valves and stopwatch is stopped. Inspect the volumes acquired in the 2 bins at the sprinkler heads. Starting with the one with the least volume, take the amount in gallons and divide by the number of seconds observed on the stopwatch. This will give you the gallons per second. Now multiply that number by 60 to establish the gallons per minute for that single head. Q = (V/T)60 Where: Q is the flow in gallons per minute (gpm) at a single head discharge point. V is the volume in gallons (approximate) observed discharged from the single head discharge point T is the time in seconds (including fraction) it took to fill the 5-gallon container at the domestic spigot valve. *This may be less than or greater than 60 seconds. Example: 6 gallons observed at one of the design head discharges in 25 seconds 6/25= .24 gallons per second .24x60= 14.4 gallons per minute For the common K4.9 factor head doing a maximum 16x16 spacing, a minimum 13gpm needs to be provided to the most remote/demanding head(s). This bucket test flow was satisfactory. Both heads flowed the minimum gpm and you confirmed the minimum 5gpm domestic demand.
