Herein, I am addressing how the city can improve the quality of MY life. 1. SunLine Bus Service - with the assistance of Robert Radi (former city council member) I made a presentation to the board of directors about adding, on an experimental basis, a bus line from Hwy 111 down Madison St. This route would pass several major developments with a major potential ridership. Personally, I could leave my car in the garage and just take the bus. I suggested that this route be run on a cost/benefit basis in order to determine if it should be made permanent. SunLine agreed with the concept BUT ONLY IF SOMEONE ELSE WOULD PAY FOR IT! A minor setback of my attempt to improve the quality of MY life! 2. Hop -On, Hop -Off Bus Service on Hwy 111. My personal experience has been to drive my car along Hwy 111 in order to take care of my appointments. This required that I spend a nonbeneficial time driving from stop -to -stop - a real waste of time and energy. My concept would have a scheduled hop -on, hop -off bus service along both sides of Hwy 111 where the service funding would be a combination of passenger fees and retail store monthly contributions. My ultimate personal benefit would be a bus along Madison St. and a hop -on, hop -off bus along Hwy 111. This would mean that my car could be stored in my garage for an extended period of time. 4. Delivery Service. Thinking ahead, assume that my first stop was at Home Depot where I purchased some 2X4 wood pieces that would not fit into the bus. However, what if there was a major service that would deliver not only the 2X4 pieces but the 65" tv from Costco and my weekly groceries from Stater bros. all for a nominal fee. The best of all improvements to MY benefits. 5. Signage My interest in signage as a personal benefit came about when a citizen remarked that she couldn't find a certain retail outlet and the signage did not list this company. The result was that a merchant lost a possible sale because the signage was inadequate. I then photographed every sidewalk sign along both sides of Hwy 111. The first sign was outside Home Depot and listed one facility while the second listed 8 for a total of 9 facilities. However, driving away from the sidewalk we counted 15 facilities - thus, the signage was short by 6 locations - a possible loss of sales if you couldn't find the store. This was the situation at other sidewalk signs - incomplete listing of retail spaces. My favorite sign was the one associated with the 110 auto mall wherein all 10 dealers were listed. The balance of the sign was essentially an electric billboard that would be visible at all hours wherein each dealer could post, on a rotating basis, their deal of the day. The two major ANNUAL COMMUNITY WORKSHOP - FEBRUARY 22, 2024 - WRITTEN COMMENTS BY RESIDENT STEVE CHERRY MATTERS NOT ON THE AGENDA - "HOW TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF MY LIFE" features of this sign that could be applied to Hwy 111 were: (1) all participants included; (2) electric billboard where each location could post their deal of the day. Heaven forbid that someone like Bed, Bath & Beyond would cease retail operations, but then my 12 -year old granddaughter could change the coding of participants. Otherwise, someone with a hammer and crowbar would physically have to remove Bed, Bath & Beyond from the existing signage. The city would have to negotiate with the property owners to improve the signage. However, the city and auto dealership on the south side of Hwy 111 were able to reach an agreement wherein the sidewalk was widened (to accommodate the parking of new cars) and a new low- level sign was installed. The city should replicate this successful outcome in dealing with Hwy 111 property owners. 6. Not So Successful To Me I had been a champion of the CV link as a method to benefit everyone with adequate physical abilities. Lately, however, my aging body objects to visualizing 40 miles of a 15 -foot wide pedestrian walkway without a restroom. There is a 100 -mile long pedestrian pathway in Orange County without a single restroom. Some years ago my two daughters rode their bicycles some 25 miles along this pathway all the way to the Pacific Ocean and verified the complete lack of restrooms. Did the CVAG need to replicate this example in Riverside County? 7. What's Next. I have presented concepts, that to me would vastly improve MY quality of life. I now challenge the city to advance some or all of these factors with SunLine, the Hwy 111 property owners, and the CVAG to get something done during my lifetime. Even though this message is explicit to MY thoughts, I assume that these are what other La Quinta citizen's would also want.
