B10. Statement of Significance Continued:
Mary Mead Maddick (1901-1997) was a prominent photographer for the Hollywood movie industry and later a celebrated advertising photographer.
At one time, Maddick was noted as one of the top five photographers in the world. Born in 1901 in Wissahicken, PA to Mary Ann Hellings and Samuel
C. Mead, Maddick moved to Los Angeles with her husband in 1928, and operated the Mead-Maddick photography studio for over 40 years. Maddick
worked with many well-known brands, such as Ivory Soap, Camel cigarettes, and MGM, and photographed many noted celebrities, including
Elizabeth Taylor, Lana Turner, Gary Cooper, and Rock Hudson. Maddick retired in 1979 and later ran the La Quinta Art Center (Desert Sun, 30 Dec
1997; Palm Desert Post, 21 Jan 1983).
The subject property was Maddick’s second home in La Quinta. The home was built within the La Quinta Country Club in the La Quinta Golf Estates
neighborhood. The La Quinta Country Club subdivision was created 1958 as the first private club with gated neighborhoods in La Quinta. The land
was originally owned by the La Quinta Hotel, and spanned approximately 130 acres. The La Quinta Country Club opened as a private golf club with
invitation only membership. The Club gained recognition in the 1960s through widespread advertisements and President Dwight D. Eisenhower's
involvement in the Club's dedication ceremony on October 23, 1960. The La Quinta Country Club developed gradually, with residences infilling the
areas between golf holes. As it grew, the subdivision was developed into eight neighborhoods: La Quinta Golf Estates, Club La Quinta, La Quinta
Fairways, Villas of La Quinta, Country Club Estates, Hacienda La Quinta, Montero Estates, and Lago La Quinta.
The subject property is located within the La Quinta Golf Estates neighborhood. While most of the residences constructed in the La Quinta Country
Club were constructed in a Tract Ranch style with Spanish style features, the La Quinta Golf Estates neighborhood was built entirely of custom
designed homes. Each home was approved by the homeowner's association prior to construction. As a result, construction in the La Quinta Golf
Estates neighborhood was slow during the 1960s and 1970s. Many homes built in the Golf Estates neighborhood during this time featured
Contemporary and Custom Ranch designs. The subject property was built in the Swiss Chalet Styled Ranch style in 1975. In a 1989 interview, Maddick
noted: “they used to talk over at the Country Club they didn’t like my house much because it didn’t belong in the desert.” She observed “It’s sort of
Swiss chalet style with a shake roof and I used a lot of redwood. I never really thought about the desert style when I built a house here.”
The dwelling is associated with the themes of Residential Development (1934-1970s) and Recreation and Leisure (1926-1970s), being located in La
Quinta's first private country club and the first residential neighborhood associated with club. However, the property does not possess individual
significance related to these themes. The residence is also associated with the theme of La Quinta Architectural Styles, as a Styled Ranch home built
in the 1970s. The residence is constructed in the Swiss Chalet Styled Ranch, a unique example within La Quinta. Due to the high degree of historic
integrity at the residence, the home is considered individually significant. As a property associated with Mary Mead-Maddick featuring a unique intact
architectural style, the property is assigned the 3S, 3SC, and 5S2 status codes: appears eligible for NR individually through survey evaluation, appears
eligible for CR individually through survey evaluation, and individually eligible for local listing or designation.
The dwelling is not individually eligible under NRHP/CRHR/Local Criterion A/1/B, as it has not been individually associated with significant events or
patterns of events in local, regional, state, or national history. The dwelling is individually eligible under Criterion B/2/B, as it has been identified as
having an association with Mary Mead-Maddick, a nationally significant photographer and artist. The dwelling is individually eligible under Criterion
C/3/C, as a property that embodies the distinctive characteristics of a Swiss Chalet Styled Ranch home in La Quinta. It is not individually eligible under
Criterion D/4/D, as further study of the dwelling would not appear to yield information which could be considered important in local, regional, state,
or national history. Additionally, the property is not individually eligible under Local Register Criterion A, as it was not found to exemplify a special
element of the City of La Quinta. The dwelling has not been substantially altered and maintains integrity from the historic period.
