It was built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style with Mediterranean Revival elements. The dwelling faces south from the north side of Avenida Fernando. It features a U-shaped plan with an asymmetrical façade. The dwelling has a low-pitch hipped roof clad with red clay tiles, with brick masonry chimneys. The roof has broad, overhanging open eaves with exposed rafter ends and facia boards. An attached garage is located at the west wing of the residence. Exterior walls are clad with stucco. The fenetration at the front elevation is obscured by a stucco-clad privacy wall that spans the entire length of the south elevation. However, real estate listing images depict a mixture of steel framed fixed-pane windows, aluminum sliding windows, vinyl casement windows, wood framed glass doors, and stucco framed arched fixed picture windows across the property. The majority of the façades are covered with shed roof patios clad with red clay tiles and supported by stone columns. The character defining features of Spanish Colonial Revival homes that can be seen on the subject property include: asymmetrical façades, clay tile roofing, stucco- clad walls, exposed beam ends, and arched openings. Mediterranean Revival elements include the porches supported by stone columns and wrought iron decorative features across the dwelling façades. P1. Other Identifier: N/A *P2. Results are limited. The property is not listed in available Coachella Valley Telephone Directories. See Continuation Sheet for significance and integrity conclusions. *B6. Construction History: The subject property was constructed in 1949. In 1987, property owner William L. Puget obtained a permit to remodel the dwelling; the work was completed by T.A. Kennedy Construction (Permit No. 002631). In 1991, Puget obtained a permit to erect a 9 ft block wall; the work was completed by HRA Construction (Permit No. 9498). In 2001, Puget obtained a permit to reroute a gas line for pool equipment; the work was completed by Maple Lead Plumbing (Permit No. 0109-088). In 2001, Puget obtained a permit to construct a 1160 sf. open trellis patio cover and retaining walls (Permit No. 0109-234). Available aerial photography indicate that additions have been added to the original dwelling since its initial construction, notably during the 1980s, when the west wing was extended northward. Most, if not all, original windows and doors have been replaced and the essential form of the residence has changed over time. *B7. Moved? ý No o Yes o Unknown Date: N/A Original Location: N/A *B8. Allen (1949; Permits), Celia Sue Ashworth (1982; Desert Sun), and William L. Puget (1987-2001; Permits). The property was originally owned and built for George E. Allen (1896-1973), a lawyer and confidant of several presidents going back to Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. Allen was closest to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a friendship which started in World War II. After the war and during Eisenhower’s presidency, Allen was one of a small group of businessmen known as “Ike’s millionaires” who advised the president and accompanied him on vacations. The New York Times noted in Allen’s obituary that “White House announcements on Presidential vacation schedules would often note that the President plans to stay at the home of an old friend, George E. Allen, at La Qunita, Calif.” The dwelling is associated with the themes of Residential Development (1934-1970s) and Recreation and Leisure (1926-1970s), being located in adjacent to the La Quinta Hotel and La Quinta's first private country club, the La Quinta Country Club. However, the George Allen House is located outside any planned residential subdivisions and is not asociated with a specific La Quinta neighborhood. It also is a private residence outside the boundaries of the La Quinta Hotel (Resort & Club). Therefore, the property does not possess individual documented significance in relation to these themes. The home is associated with George Allen, but it does not meet the thresholds of integrity necessary for individual designation. The property is assigned a 6Z status code: Found ineligible for NRHP, CRHR or Local Register through survey evaluation. The dwelling is not individually eligible under NRHP/CRHR/Local Criterion A/1/B, as it has not been associated with significant events or patterns of events in local, regional, state, or national history. The dwelling is not individually eligible under Criterion B/2/B. While it is associated with George E. Allen, a significant national political and business figure, it does not meet the integrity thresholds for significance under this criterion because the dwelling only retains integrity of location, setting, and association. The dwelling is not individually eligible under Criterion C/3/C, as it does not embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction; and it is not individually eligible under Criterion D/4/D, as further study of the dwelling would not appear to yield information which could be considered important in local, regional, state, or national history. Additionally, the property is not individually eligible under Local Register Criterion A, as it was not found to exemplify a special element of the City of La Quinta. The dwelling has been substantially altered and not longer maintains integrity from the historic period. B10.
