Subject: Back (East) Wall Validation with New Door Opening
To whom it may concern:
The back (east) wall of the structure located at the aforementioned address has been analyzed for
structural adequacy, specifically with respect to the door opening at gridline C. The full length of this wall,
at the time of permitting, was 116'8". The placement of the door on gridline C caused a loss of 6 feet of
shear wall. This is a reduction of 5.1 % of the lateral capacity of the shear wall. Per section 403.4 of the
California Existing Building Code (which is referenced by chapter 34 of the CBC), if the decrease in
capacity of a lateral force resisting element is less than 10%, while the demand on the element remains
the same, then the alteration to the element is acceptable, per the exception within that code
section. Therefore, this modification to the north shear wall of this building is acceptable.
