A RESOLUTION OF ThE CITY COUNCIL OF ThE CITY
OF LA QUINTA, CALIFORNIA, ESTABlisHING A
ALTERNATIVE FUEL POLICY
WHEREAS, the City of La Quinta's General Plan Goal 9-6 identifies clean-
burning fuels in vehicles as a way to reduce mobile source pollutant emissions; and,
WHEREAS, General Plan Objective 9-6.1 identifies replacing City vehicles
utilizing gasoline and diesel internal combustion engine technology with vehicles that operate on
clean-burning fuels; and,
WHEREAS, General Plan Policy 9-6.1.1 states that the City shall examine the
feasibility of replacing unusable internal combustion City vehicles with vehicles operating on
clean-burning fuels such as natural gas, methanol, propane, and electricity. Vehicles utilizing
clean fuels shall be purchased where alternative fuels and refueling methods are available and
where the vehicles are capable of performing required functions; and,
WHEREAS, the State of California Air Resources Board has established four
categories of alternate fuel vehicles, transitional low emission vehicles, low emission vehicles,
ultra low emission vehicles, and zero emission vehicles; and,
WHEREAS, Sunline Transit Agency has established a compressed natural gas
CNG) facility within the Coachella Valley accessible to the community; and,
WHEREAS, the City of La Quinta has adopted air quality standards in an effort
to be more responsive to air quality within the Valley; and,
NOW, ThEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of La
Quinta, California as follows:
1. That the City shall, whenever possible, start the conversion of and encourage the
purchase of alternative fuel vehicles for City use
2. That the City shall give purchase priority to vehicles manufactured and/or that qualify
by the California Air Resources Board as:
a. Zero Emission Vehicle.
b. Ultra Low Emission Vehicle.
c. Low Emission Vehicle.
d. Transitional Low Emission Vehicle.

^#E^3. That the City shall consider use of vehicle, range of vehicle, cost of vehicle, available
fuel sources, anticipated maintenance costs, anticipated fuel costs, and vehicle safety
considerafions prior to purchase or conversion of City vehicles.
4. That the City shall encourage businesses within the City and neighboring agencies to
convert or purchase alternate fuel vehicles.

City Council, held On this 3rd day of August, 1993, by the following vote, to wit:
