SUBJECT: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP AND ATTACHED PRELIMINARY
DRAFT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN
On Saturday, March 9, 1996, the City Cow?il will be sponsoring a workshop on the City's proposed
economic development efforts. The program will involve:
* reviewing the reasons for an Economic Development Plan;
* describing how the Plan interfaces with other City and Redevelopment Agency activities;
* presenting data on growth in the Coachella Valley, La Quinta's niche markets, and City
infrastructure needs in financial resources; and
* discussing these items and seeking input on policies that will guide City/Agency economic
development efforts.
City staff's primary desire is to stimulate discussion with both the Council and the community in
order to gain valuable insight and input on the desired direction for economic development activities.
Subsequent to the workshop, staff will then embody this input into a draft Economic Development
Plan that will be presented for City Council consideration on April 16,1996.
Enclosed for your review is a preliminary draft Economic Development Plan. Our purpose in
transmitting this document in its current state is to: 1) stimulate thoughts on the economic
development planning effort that will lead to discussion at Saturday's workshop, and 2) provide an
outline of staff's proposal for an Econornic Development Plan. Further, the document includes draft
policies and identified target areas for implementation activities. We desire input and direction
regarding these policies and target areas so that we may final them for your subsequent consideration
in April.
We look forward to engaging in stimulating discussions with you on Saturday.
