Updated Description: The 51001 Eisenhower Drive building was constructed in 1938 in the Village in La Quinta. The one story
building was constructed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. The building has rectangular form with a low pitch side gable roof.
The roof extends slightly at the front elevation to form a covered open veranda supported by narrow posts. The rafter ends are
exposed. There is a stucco clad chimney at the north gable end. The front elevation has a symmetrical facade with a centered door
and two double hung windows at the either side of the front door. The original front door with a "Z" shaped timber is extant. The
exterior is clad in stucco. There is an addition to the rear of the building at the northwest corner. The addition is stucco clad with a
flat roof, and a horizontal sliding window at the front elevation of the addition. The building was constructed as one of the original La
Quinta Cove casitas. The building has since been converted to a commercial building. There have not been any alterations to the
building since the prior survey.
Updated Significance: This dwelling is a contributor to the La Quinta Cove Thematic Historic District which is considered eligible
under Local Criterion B (events) for its association with the Residential Development theme. The Cove district is also considered
eligible under Local Register Criterion A (special element) as the first residential subdivision within the boundaries of the city
constructed with Spanish Revival style homes and eligible under Local Register Criterion E as a geographically definable area
possessing a concentration of buildings, structures, and improvements linked historically. The dwelling retains a sufficient level of
integrity from the 1935 to 1950 period of significance for individual designation. The district is not formally designated, and the
property is assigned a 5B status code: Locally significant both individually (listed, eligible, or appears eligible) and as contributor to a
multi-component resource like a district that is locally listed, designated, determined eligible, or appears eligible through survey
evaluation.
The dwelling has not been found individually eligible under NRHP/CRHR/Local Criterion A/1/B, as it has not been associated with
significant events or patterns of events in local, regional, state, or national history; not individually eligible under Criterion B/2/B, as it
has not been identified as having an association with an important person; and not individually eligible under Criterion D/4/D, as
further study of the dwelling would not appear to yield information which could be considered important in local, regional, state, or
national history. Additionally, the property was not found to be individually eligible under Local Register Criterion A, as it was not
found to exemplify a special element of the City of La Quinta.
This property individually embodies the distinctive characteristics of a Spanish Colonial Revival style “casita” bungalow built in the
Cove during the 1930s is considered individually significant under Local Criterion C/3/C for embodying the distinctive characteristics
of a type, period, or method of construction. As the dwelling has not been substantially altered, this dwelling maintains integrity
from the historic period.
