HOUSING AUTHORITY AGENDA 2 OCTOBER 1, 2013 Z OF CITY / SA / HA / FA MEETING DATE: October 1, 2013 AGENDA CATEGORY: BUSINESS SESSION: 1 ITEM TITLE: INTERVIEW AND APPOINT RESIDENTS TO FILL TWO VACANCIES ON THE HOUSING CONSENT CALENDAR: COMMISSION STUDY SESSION: PUBLIC HEARING: RECOMMENDED ACTION: Appoint residents to fill two vacancies on the Housing Commission for terms ending June 30, 2016. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • There are three vacancies on the five -member Housing Commission. Two are designated non -tenant seats and the other is the tenant-over-age-62 seat. • Three applications were received from residents who qualify for the non -tenant position. No applications were received for the tenant-over-age-62 position. FISCAL IMPACT: None. BACKGROUND/ANALYSIS: Notices calling for applications were published in The Desert Sun newspaper on August 9 and August 30, 2013, in the August issue of The Gem, and posted on the City's website and community bulletin boards. The application submittal deadline was September 16, 2013, and the following three residents applied: Everett H. Long Michele McDonough Evelyn Pivnick The term of the two non -tenant vacancies will be for three years as set by newly adopted Ordinance 516, but to keep all Commissioners' terms to the uniform ending date of June 30, the terms for these two seats will be slightly adjusted to run from appointment date (October 1, 2013) to June 30, 2016. ALTERNATIVE: Council established the Housing Commission as five -member body to best fulfill the duties assigned. The current two -member body cannot effectively conduct Commission business; therefore, staff does not recommend an alternative.
