Statement of Significance Continued: Past owners and occupants include: Barton Construction Company (1964; Palm Desert Post 08 Oct 1964), Jeremiah and Evelyn Coon (1971-1993; Palm Desert Post 14 Oct 1971, Permits), Tom Durbin (2010; Permits). The Barton Construction Company obtained the permit for the construction of the residence in 1964. The construction was valued at $20,000. Jeremiah and Evelyn Coon owned the property between 1972 and 1993. Evelyn Coon was the president of the Episcopal Church Women of St. Margret's and a chairman of the Maternity Teas at Valley Memorial Hospital in 1971 (Desert Sun, 16 Jan 1971; Desert Sun, 13 May 1971). Jeremiah was a retired United States postal clerk. He passed away in 1991 (Desert Sun, 29 April 1991). Tom Durbin owned the property in 2010. The home was built in the Tract Ranch style within the Santa Carmelita Unit 11 tract, recorded in 1935, and is within the La Quinta Cove neighborhood. In 1932, E.S. Kiener purchased thousands of acres of land in what would become the La Quinta Cove neighborhood. The area was subdivided into a grid of small vacation home lots. Sixty-three casitas were built between 1935 and 1941, the first residences in the Cove. These casitas were built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style to imitate traditional Spanish style homes. In the following years, the La Quinta Cove neighborhood would continue to infill with single family residence, constructed in a wide variety of architectural styles. The subject property was constructed in 1964. While the 77876 Calle Sonora property is located within the proposed La Quinta Cove Historic District, it is a non-contributor due to its architectural style and date of construction. The dwelling is associated with the theme of Residential Development (1934-1970s), but it does not possess individual documented significance in relation to this theme. The property is assigned a 6Z status code: Found ineligible for NRHP, CRHR or Local Register through survey evaluation. The dwelling is not individually eligible under NRHP/CRHR/Local Criterion A/1/B, as it has not been associated with significant events or patterns of events in local, regional, state, or national history; not individually eligible under Criterion B/2/B, as it has not been identified as having an association with an important person; not individually eligible under Criterion C/3/C, as it does not embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction; and not individually eligible under Criterion D/4/D, as further study of the dwelling would not appear to yield information which could be considered important in local, regional, state, or national history. Additionally, the property is not individually eligible under Local Register Criterion A, as it was not found to exemplify a special element of the City of La Quinta. As the dwelling has not been substantially altered, it maintains integrity from the historic period. B10.
