CC Resolution 1992-082^#C I RESOLUTION NO. 92-82 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA QUINTA, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE LISTING OF THE PENINSULAR BIG HORN SHEEP AS AN ENDANGERED SPECIES PURSUANT TO THE PROVISIONS OF THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT OF 1973, AS AMENDED. WHEREAS, there are only 125 Peninsular Big Horn Sheep left in the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains and approximately 380 in the entire United States; and WHEREAS, listing the Peninsular Big Horn Sheep will result in recognition, conservation, and Federal protection of the species; and WHEREAS, if the Peninsular Big Horn Sheep survives as a species, they will perform aesthetic and educational functions; and WHEREAS, as knowledge, studies, and technology improves, the possibility of reestablishing the Peninsular Big Horn population increases; and WHEREAS, the protection of the peninsular Big Horn Sheep enjoys community support, and their listing as an endangered species will be little negative economic impact in La Quinta; and WHEREAS, declaring the Peninsular Big Horn Sheep as endangered will provide future generations the opportunity to enjoy these magnificent animals. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of La Quinta, California, that it supports the efforts of the Friends of the Environment in its attempt to have Federal legislation passed to list the Peninsular Big Horn Sheep as an endangered species and encourages other cities in the Coachella Valley to do the same.
