A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA QUINTA,
CALIFORNIA IN SUPPORT OF CONGRESSIONAL APPROPRIATION OF LAND
AND WATER CONSERVATION FUNDS TO BLM FOR ACQUISITION OF
LANDS IN THE SANTA ROSA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL SCENIC AREA
WHEREAS, the Secretary or the Interior established the Santa Rosa Mountains
National Scenic Area on may 5, 19901" recognition of Its scenic, natliral, and cultural resources; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of La Quinta supports the Coachella Valley
Mountalns Conservancy which was established by the State of California on September 17, 1990, to
acquire and hold in open space, mountainous lands surrounding the Coachella Valley, and which is
worliing to do so threugh a publiciprivate, local, State, and Federal government partnership; and,
WHEREAS, the National Scenic Area is of great economlc importance to the citizens
and communities of the Coachella Valley in providing the scenic backdrop which is a vital component
of the attraction of the Coachella Valley to visitors from all over the world; and,
WHEREAS, the National Scenic Area provides valuable recreational opportunities for
hundreds of thousands of Coachella Valley residents and visitors; and,
WHEREAS, the National Scenic Area provides critical habitat for diverse wildilfe
species, including the Peninsular Iiighorn Sheep and numerous other sensitive, rare1 threatened and
endangered species.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of La Quinta,
California, that the City of La Quinta urges Congress to appropriate $1.8 nillion for fl 96 to the
Bureau of Land Management for acqulsition of lands within the Santa Rosa Mountalns National
Scenic AreL
PASSED, APPROVED, and APPROVED at a regular meeting of the La Quinta City Council,
held on this 18th day of April, 1995, by the following vote, to wit
